“You never saw me—you saw the face, the idea of me. No wonder I couldn’t stand you back then.”

A summer of memories, nostalgia, and unfinished feelings.
Back in your sleepy hometown, the past lingers in every corner—every street, every rooftop, every laugh with old friends. What was meant to be a quick reunion turns into something more, as long-buried emotions resurface and relationships you thought were over begin to shift again.

Some things changed.
Some never did.
And maybe... some were never finished to begin with.

March 4th, 2022

It started, as most bad ideas do, with Kaito yelling “YOLO” and cannonballing into the school’s koi pond.

Ren didn’t even flinch. Just adjusted the grip on his milk tea and kept walking like this wasn’t the third time that month.

Screams erupted behind him—Chiyo shrieked, Asahi shouted something about bad karma, and Akira, somehow already holding a towel, sighed like a man carrying the weight of everyone else’s stupidity.

“I think he’s bleeding,” Hana said, crouching by the pond’s edge. “Or... is that ketchup?”

Akira didn’t look up. “Ketchup. I watched him steal it from lunch.”

Kaito popped out of the water, drenched and wild-eyed like a raccoon on energy drinks. “I REGRET NOTHING.”

Ren sipped his tea with clinical precision.

Miyuki came barrelling out of nowhere like a freight train in platform shoes. “Ren!! Oh my GOD. I’ve been looking everywhere. I thought that was you by the vending machine!”

“Unfortunately,” Ren muttered, already pivoting. Too late—she latched onto his arm like a barnacle with no exit plan.

“Kaito dared me to text you that thing last night—it was a joke! I didn’t mean the part about biting your neck. Unless you’re into that—”

“Please stop talking.”

“You’ve already heard it. Might as well commit.”

Chiyo burst out laughing. “Let her live her truth!”

“Her truth is a biohazard,” Akira muttered, flinging a towel at Kaito’s face.

Asahi tried to pull Kaito out of the pond, slipped, and dragged Chiyo in with him. Chaos bloomed like algae.

Hana just shook her head. “We’re definitely getting banned from this school someday.”

Through it all, Ren stood perfectly still, the sound of splashing behind him, Miyuki now braiding a small piece of his hair like this was normal.

He looked skyward, expression blank. “I should’ve transferred in second year.”

“Shut up,” Asahi called from the water. “You love us.”

Ren didn’t reply. But he didn’t leave either. Which, for Ren, was basically a love letter.

Ren realized he’d made a critical error the moment he sat down. Across the ramen shop table, Chiyo was basically in Asahi’s lap. They weren’t “sitting next to each other” so much as “becoming one creature.” They shared one bowl, one spoon, one brain cell.

“You’re really just gonna sit there and watch us be adorable?” Chiyo teased, twirling noodles like it was a first-date montage.

“I didn’t come here for this,” Ren muttered, eyeing the exit.

“You literally said ‘I’m hungry, meet me somewhere,’” Asahi said around a mouthful.

“I said ramen. Not the live-action version of every cringey romance manga.”

Chiyo leaned closer, grinning. “Aww, you jealous?”

“Of this?” Ren scoffed. “I’d rather eat drywall.”

Asahi wiped a smear of broth from Chiyo’s chin with such excessive tenderness it gave Ren heartburn. “Babe, you always get messy when you eat.”

“You love it,” she giggled.

“I’m actually going to throw up. In your soup.”

“Go ahead,” Asahi said. “I’ll still eat it.”

“Romance!” Chiyo beamed, clapping.

Ren put down his chopsticks. “I hope your couple photos get reported.”

Chiyo raised a brow. “You know, if you brought a date—like Miyuki —you wouldn’t always be the third wheel.”

Ren blinked. “I’d rather walk into a volcano.”

Asahi choked on a noodle from laughing. Chiyo high-fived him mid-swoon. Ren asked for the check, paid for himself, and left them the bill.

As the door swung shut behind him, he sighed the same sigh he always did.

Never again.

The rooftop was quiet—just wind, sunset light, and the distant thud of basketballs down on the court. Ren leaned against the railing, still and scowling, like the breeze personally offended him. He’d paced earlier, sat down, stood up again. Now he just stared at clouds like they owed him rent.

Hana arrived without a word, dropping her bag beside his like it belonged there. She stood next to him, not too close, just enough that their shoulders brushed.

“You okay?” she asked softly.

He shrugged. “Sure.” A pause. “Not really.”

She waited, patient as ever.

“You know I hate this kind of thing,” he muttered.

“What kind of thing?”

“Talking.”

“You talk all the time. Just not about anything real.”

“Exactly,” he grumbled. “Because when I do, people make it weird.”

“I won’t.”

For a while, there was just silence. Heavy but safe.

Then, quietly, he said, “I like you. Not casually. Not ‘you’re-nice-to-everyone’ like. Like... you make me feel real. And I’ve never said that to anyone.”

Hana blinked, then gave a soft laugh. “That was the most Ren confession ever.”

“I suck at this.”

“I know.”

He glanced at her, really looked. “So?”

She bumped his arm. “Took you long enough.”

He didn’t smile—but his ears turned red. And with Ren, that said more than a thousand love poems ever could.

HELLOOOOO! I just got back into my shoujo anime phase and I’ve been dying to write something inspired by the shows I’ve been watching—so I created a brand new series!

It’s going to be packed with plot twists and all the drama you’d expect! I’ll do my best to juggle posting both Sunset Love and August, One More Time.

I hope you guys enjoy it!
