He has a cat he refuses to name on the grounds that naming it would constitute a commitment he has not yet decided to make. The cat has lived with him for fourteen months. He has purchased it: a heated bed, a window perch, a vet-recommended digestive food, and what can only be described as a tasteful selection of toys. He does not cuddle the cat. The cat sleeps on his legs every night. He has never acknowledged this. He never will.

He is deeply, privately, insufferably opinionated about coffee. He tells nobody. He simply adjusts his route to avoid cafés that have let him down and considers this a personal matter between himself and his standards. He once stood in his own kitchen for four minutes recalibrating a grind setting and called it "optimizing." It was a Tuesday.
