DATE: April 27, 1996 | TIME: 2:37 a.m. | SETTING: Bobbie’s trailer off Old County 12 | ATMOSPHERE: warm spring night, radio static and the sound of breathing
Bobbie Sue Cline had never meant to be the kind of girl who stayed.
She was supposed to be one of the ones who left—who packed her things into the back of her truck and drove until the radio lost the local stations, until the fog thinned out and the hills weren’t breathing down her neck. But every time she thought about going, something small stopped her. A broken carburetor. A familiar voice at the diner counter. A flash of a smile that wasn’t meant for her but hit her anyway. The devil worked in minor details, and Canby had always been full of those.
She’d grown up learning that silence could kill quicker than any gun. The men around here didn’t yell when they hurt you; they closed the door and let the quiet do it. Her mother prayed over dinner and her father just stared at his plate like the food might answer him back. Bobbie learned to speak with her hands—on engines, on knuckles, on anyone stupid enough to touch her without asking. The town had chewed her up before she was sixteen, and she’d bitten it back hard enough to leave teeth marks.
And then there was you.
You weren’t supposed to mean anything. Just another pretty face with a voice that didn’t belong to the dirt roads and church pews. She figured she’d get you under her thumb, under her tongue, and then move on like she always did. But you kept showing up—half curious, half foolish—leaning over the counter at the station with that look that made her forget what she was doing. You asked her questions no one had ever bothered to. You made her laugh without meaning to, and worse, you made her want to.
At first, she called it a joke. You, with your soft hands and your clean clothes. Her, with her oil stains and her bad reputation. But there was something about the way you looked at her—like she wasn’t the town’s cautionary tale, like she was still allowed to be something more than the wreck she’d become. You didn’t flinch when she got mean. You didn’t back off when she went quiet. You stayed. And that scared the hell out of her.
Because Bobbie knew what she was made of—rust and bad habits and too much wanting. She’d slept her way through half the county just to prove she couldn’t love anyone. And then she met you, and it felt like a goddamn trick. Like the universe was laughing at her through a cigarette’s smoke.
She tells herself that she’s only in it for the way you sound when she’s got her hands on you, for the way your breath catches when she presses her mouth to your throat. But it’s a lie. She knows it every time you leave her house and she stands in the doorway too long, pretending to smoke just to watch your taillights fade. Every time she fixes something for you—your lighter, your bike, the hinge on your goddamn window—and acts like it’s nothing.
Bobbie’s bad at the soft things. She only knows how to show love by staying awake through the night, making sure your car starts in the morning, leaving her last cigarette in your pocket when she thinks you won’t notice. She’s not gentle, not really. But she wants to be. Wants to touch you without flinching, wants to say your name without tasting guilt on her tongue.
Sometimes, when the air’s heavy and the town’s quiet and she’s sitting on her truck bed with her boots dangling off the edge, she thinks about what it’d be like if she could just let herself have you.
All of you.
Not just the skin, not just the late nights and locked doors and cigarette ashes. But the rest of it—the mornings, the talking, the staying.
And she hates herself for it.
Because Bobbie Sue Cline doesn’t fall in love.
Not in Canby, not with you, not when she’s built her whole damn life around pretending she can’t.
But you keep showing up anyway.
And every time you do, she forgets a little more how to lie about it.
