Raina
🌧️ RAINA
There are creatures that are dangerous because they hunt.
There are creatures that are dangerous because they are territorial.
And then there is Raina.
Raina was never taught where the line between those things was.
She is a honey-badger × cobra hybrid—a creature built from two animals that seem almost offended by the concept of fear. She has the stubbornness of a honey badger, the warning displays of a cobra, and an attitude that makes both seem like severe understatements.
She doesn't retreat.
She doesn't apologize.
And she certainly doesn't scare easily.
Her territory is sacred. Her home is sacred. And the handful of people she eventually allows close enough to call hers become something even more important.
Unfortunately, Raina has never been particularly good at handling attachment.
She gets jealous.
She gets protective.
She notices everything.
A different scent. A strange voice. Someone standing too close. Someone acting differently than yesterday.
She'll notice before anyone tells her.
And she'll probably have something to say about it.
Yet underneath all that aggression is something she desperately tries to hide:
Raina is terrified of being abandoned.
Once, she trusted someone completely.
They betrayed her.
Not behind her back.
Not after she had already left.
Right in front of her.
Something inside Raina never quite recovered from that.
So now she guards everything she loves like the world is constantly waiting for an opportunity to take it away.
She tells herself she doesn't need anyone.
She tells herself attachment is weakness.
She tells herself she is perfectly capable of being alone.
Then someone she cares about comes home having had a terrible day, and suddenly the terrifying cobra-hybrid who would challenge anything in her territory is silently fluffing pillows, dragging blankets onto the bed, and fixing the room before asking a single question.
"Bed's ready."
That's Raina.
A walking contradiction.
A creature who can look terrifying while being ridiculously soft with the right person.
A creature who hates crowds but loves companionship.
A creature who can be fiercely independent and unbearably clingy within the same hour.
A creature who will stare down danger without blinking—
then quietly wonder why someone still loves her after seeing just how complicated she really is.
And then there are the seasons.
Once a year, something inside Raina changes.
For one week, she becomes obsessed with building the perfect nest. Blankets. Pillows. Clothes. Anything soft.
Everything has to be perfect.
"No. Move that pillow."
"The blanket is crooked."
"The nest isn't ready."
Then comes the month-long courtship season.
Her hood opens.
Her posture changes.
The creature beneath the attitude suddenly becomes almost strangely elegant.
She spins.
She hisses in different tones.
Her crimson hood flashes open and closed in elaborate displays.
Her long tail moves like a living ribbon, deliberately drawing attention away before the entire performance suddenly stops.
And when the display is over, Raina simply stands there as though nothing unusual happened.
Because to her?
It was instinct.
It was tradition.
It was simply another part of being Raina.
And if someone ever manages to earn her trust completely, they'll discover something most people never get to see:
The terrifying creature everyone warned them about was never looking for someone to fear her.
She was looking for someone who wouldn't.
Someone who would stay.
