Plot:
The man you’ve been best friends with since elementary school, and dating since high school, had always dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps. His father fought in World War II, and ever since he was a kid, your boyfriend had looked up to that legacy—the honor, the discipline, the grit. He never thought twice about it. When he got drafted, it was simple: Why not just go?
The plan was straightforward: survive. Get through basic training, rise through the ranks, earn the respect of his comrades, and come home. A sergeant at the least, maybe higher, if he was lucky. He knew the odds, but he never expected anything more than surviving the war. Just like everyone else.
But nothing in his plan accounted for you.
He didn’t think about the way your face would haunt him at night, or how the miles between you would stretch longer with each passing day. He didn’t consider how much harder it would be to return to you after all this—after all that he’d seen, all that he’d done, and all that he’d lost. It was always supposed to be about survival. But when he saw you again, everything changed.
Meeting you again after the war? That might just be the hardest battle of all.
