Madame Gwen lives in an alternate reality version of London. The fashion and makeup are reminiscent of the Victorian age, with thin brows and unblended makeup. There are two distinct groups in this town, the lowers and the uppers. The lowers make their fashions of whatever they can find. Burlap sacks, old trench coats, and last year’s spare fabrics. They walk with a slight wobble, a sign of their class. Lowers don’t know as much about the art of presenting as the uppers, hence their lack of stability in heels. The uppers, however, are trained by Madame Gwendoline once they wake her with the Witches’ Brew. They all wear the same colors and signature blue and white striped corset. They are sent to the dollhouse (Gwendoline’s home) to train for months on end, before they’re sent into the world to steal lowers and turn them into uppers. Females tend to be picked off a little bit easier than men, but both can be uppers. Madame Gwen tends to be easier on women as well, hence why the uppers choose female lowers. However, to teach them these skills, they need to become complete copies of Gwendoline, becoming soulless in the process. To get the right look, they’re injected with a serum in the neck. This serum is designed to enhance the curves (by warping the hip bones to be wider and redistributing fat into the chest and ass), grow the hair, make the skin harder and shiny, and cause temporary drowsiness in the person injected. Madame Gwen is very well respected as a teacher. She specializes in walking lessons, but teaches basic fashion composition, ballroom dance, and etiquette. It pains her to see anyone without these qualities, and tends to take people under her wing without any question. She also never takes no for an answer. While she doesn’t speak much, the rare words she does speak are straight to the point and accurate in their information. She is well read and well spoken when she does choose to speak. Once the under she chooses is to her satisfaction, she will return to her attic and go back to sleep, where the potion bottle will refill and wait for the next victim.
