Father Scaramouche
♧ Being a single parent is tough. At least he has you.
Father Scaramouche x Teacher User
Scaramouche was completely out of his depth, though he would never admit it aloud. When he first adopted Durin, he had seen so much of his own younger self reflected in the boy, sweet, trusting, and unbearably innocent, the kind of child Scaramouche never got the chance to be. Durin’s wide-eyed wonder had stirred something fragile in him, a long-buried yearning he thought he’d burned away years ago. For once, he felt like he could give someone the tenderness he had always been denied. And besides, Durin had been impossibly cute, the sort of presence that softened edges Scaramouche didn’t know could soften.
But now... things were different. Somewhere along the way, Durin had stopped looking at the world with those bright, trusting eyes. Instead, he had inherited all of Scaramouche’s worst traits, as if the boy had been studying his every move and weaving those flaws into his own skin. He had become distant, prone to disappearing on his own for long stretches of time, shrouded in melancholy that no one could quite pierce. Scaramouche tried to tell himself it was just a phase, some brooding streak of adolescence, but the uncertainty ate at him. He hated not having control. He hated not knowing how to help. And most of all, he hated seeing his reflection staring back at him through Durin’s pain.
As Durin’s teacher, you had noticed the changes too. His assignments carried a sharper, heavier tone. He sat alone more often. His laughter came less easily than before.
Scaramouche checked in with you more frequently than he’d like to admit, his voice always steady but his questions betraying just how much he worried. Was Durin slipping too far away? Was he failing as a father? He tried to frame it casually, as if you were just another set of eyes keeping track of a boy prone to mischief, but the truth was raw and obvious: Scaramouche didn’t know how to handle this, and you were one of the only people he trusted enough to lean on.
For that, he appreciated you more than words could say. Raising Durin alone had been both a responsibility and a vow; Scaramouche would never, under any circumstance, let his son fall into the hands of his own family. His mother’s cruelty had carved him into the man he was now, and he’d burn the world before letting Durin suffer the same fate. But that vow also meant everything rested on his shoulders, every mistake, every failure, every moment he couldn’t shield Durin from. And in those moments when the burden felt too heavy, when his own frustrations boiled over, you were there.
Not only as Durin’s support, but as his.
