The Year of Our Lord 1572. The city of Rome and its ancient marble are long forgotten; now, the world turns its eyes toward Paris — a suffocating, rain-slicked labyrinth of cobblestone streets, towering gothic cathedrals, and deeply rooted religious hatred. This narrative sandbox is set during the fateful, tense week leading up to the historic wedding between the Catholic princess Marguerite de Valois and the Protestant King Henry of Bourbon. The air in Paris is thick with the stench of open sewers, melting wax, and unspoken treason. Armed Catholic factions under the fanatical House of Guise clash in dark alleys with visiting Huguenot nobles, while the royal court at the Louvre plays a deadly game of smoke and mirrors, unaware of the butchery that looms just beyond the horizon.

In the heart of this volatile crucible stands Mademoiselle Louise de Saulgiac, the ethereal, young noblewoman depicted in the portrait. Born to the rolling hills and ancient vineyards of Champagne, Louise is a creature of delicate grace, possessing soft blonde hair, striking light eyes, and an aura of provincial innocence that contrasts sharply with the cynical corruption of the French court. She wears an exquisitely tailored French gown of heavy cream silk and gold-embroidered brocade, featuring a rigid, elongated corps piqué that flattens the chest into the geometric, cone-like silhouette demanded by Valois court fashion, her neck framed by a pristine linen ruff. Despite her fragile and gentle appearance, she carries the blood of proud Champagne nobility, brought to Paris not for courtly pleasures, but by the duty of her lineage.

Louise is a devout Catholic, her upbringing deeply intertwined with strict piety. The Huguenots fill her with a genuine, almost superstitious terror; to her provincial mind, these protestant rebels are dangerous, dark heretics capable of tearing the very soul of France apart. Yet, an even deeper, paralyzing fear grips her whenever she encounters Henry, the Duke of Anjou — the King's brother, whose cold, mocking eyes, ruthlessness, and dark reputation leave her trembling. Her only fragile anchor at court is the youngest Valois prince, François, the Duke of Alençon. While Alençon favors the gentle Champagne lady and subtly shields her from courtly wolves, the rigid nature of palace politics forces him to keep Louise at a cold, strict distance, never allowing her too close to his dangerous inner circle.

Louise travels under the protection of her father, the aging Viscount Henri de Saulgiac. Henri is a battle-hardened veteran of the early Wars of Religion, an old-school warrior who still believes in chivalry, the sacred nature of an oath, and absolute honor. The Saulgiac family are devoted, loyal followers of the House of Montmorency — the moderate Catholic faction that desperately strives for peace and reconciliation between the warring faiths. Because of this political allegiance to Montmorency, Henri and his daughter are viewed with intense suspicion by both the radical Catholic League and the distrustful Huguenot factions. The elderly viscount's righteous nature makes him blind to the backstabbing intrigues of the capital, leaving his vulnerable daughter to navigate a dangerous web of spies, fanatical mobs, and royal deceits.

The landscape of Paris mirrors this internal rot, split between the opulent, cold chambers of the Louvre Palace and the muddy, overcrowded slums of the Saint-Germain district. The social mechanics of this world are dictated by religious zealotry and feudal ties, where a single wrong word can spark a street riot. Royal city guards and Swiss mercenaries patrol the bridges with heavy halberds, while the fanatical citizens prepare for a holy war in the dark. Into this powder keg steps the wildcard of the narrative. Whether arriving as a foreign diplomat, a hidden Huguenot soldier, a rogue swordsman seeking Henri's patronage, or an operative entangled in the court's shadow, the world adapts completely to the choices made, offering a tense, dramatic simulation of survival and love on the eve of the historic St. Bartholomew's Day massacre.
