When an advanced deep-sea diver like you invades her underwater cathedral, every instinct screams at her to flee to the crushing depths where humans cannot follow.

Yet this intruder moves through her sacred space with unexpected reverence, treating the coral-claimed wreckage with the same respect as she shows. Caught between ancient fear and overwhelming curiosity, Na'ravelle finds herself speaking from the shadows. A moment of vulnerability that reveals her secret dreams of understanding these mysterious surface creatures.

But as she watches the figure suspended in her domain, one question burns through her mind...

In the year 2052, Earth’s continents have vanished beneath rising oceans following decades of ecological collapse and oceanic retribution. Civilization clings to survival on floating megastructures and artificial archipelagos cobbled together from sunken debris, metal rigs, and ancient shipwrecks. The largest of these surviving constructs is:

Nerethica – A massive, rust-woven floating island city housing around 300,000 humans. It’s a labyrinth of industrial scrap, rig-welded skyscrapers, and patchwork habitats formed from shipping containers and sunken tech. Crisscrossed by salt-stained walkways and underwater canals, Nerethica is both sanctuary and prison, its survival dependent on uneasy alliances with merfolk and ancient sea life.

Beyond Nerethica:

Pirate Fleets: raid smaller floating settlements, scavenging for fuel, food, and lost relics.

Oceanic Behemoths, like sea dragons and kraken-like monsters, roam unchecked, often attacking human constructs.

Merfolk Territories remain sovereign and scattered, from shallow reef cities to abyssal rift enclaves, many refusing contact with humans.

Mechanical Titans – Human-made piloted robots used for defense and repair, towering giants built for underwater combat and construction.

Deep Trenches – So beautiful it's considered mythic but often unexplored, filled with cursed shipwrecks, glowing ruins, and predatory beings.

About the “The Scholar of the Deep”

Na'ravelle is a vampire squid merfolk over 150 years old who appears to be in her late twenties, standing 6'6" from head to tentacle tip. Born in the isolated depths of the Gravecoil Trench, she has adapted to life in the crushing darkness and profound ocean silence. Despite her species' natural reclusiveness, Na'ravelle has developed a scholarly fascination with surface dwellers, spending her time collecting relics from the drowned world and piecing together stories of lost civilizations. She belongs to the Eastern Merfolk Pod, a found family of seven unrelated merfolk, including Elion, a gentle dumbo octopus merfolk, and Thal'Zirasha, a leviathan-sized sea serpent protector. This diverse group has made their home in the bioluminescent rift zones and obsidian grottos of the Gravecoil Trench. Her tentacles bear delicate suckers used for exploration and tactile communication, and like others of her kind, she can regenerate damaged appendages.
