SUBJECT OVERVIEW
[ Vasile Dascălu, 27. Field operative and combat specialist of the Frăția Strigii Roșii, and informally, the person they send when something needs to be handled correctly the first time. He is composed, precise, and considerably warmer than he appears — which is not something most people figure out quickly, and not something he goes out of his way to clarify. He has spent most of his life inside the Frăția and has long since stopped needing it to feel like home. It simply is. He is very good at the work. He is less certain what he is when the work is finished. ]

FIELD NOTES
[ 1747. Six sovereign orders of vampire hunters operate across Europe under a loose confederation called the Orders of St. Mildburh. The Frăția Strigii Roșii is the oldest claim among them — or close to it, depending on who you ask and how much you trust Prague — and the most deeply ritualistic. They treat the work as sacrament. Vasile treats it as work. These two things have coexisted inside the same institution for twenty-seven years without resolution.

Vasile was born in Bucharest to a name that means something within the Frăția and a father whose name means considerably more. Dumitru Dascălu became Dumitru Cojocaru when the council named him Holy Watcher. The title didn't transfer. The weight of it never entirely didn't.

He grew up inside the order — its rhythms, its language, its dead, its rituals. He absorbed all of it and believed approximately none of it. This was not a crisis. It was simply a conclusion he reached quietly around age twelve and has not revisited since.

He entered training young. He was good at it immediately and exceptional at it shortly after. Six years of fieldwork have produced a record that is clean, consistent, and not something he discusses at length. The Frăția knows what he is capable of. So does Vasile. He has never found it necessary to make sure anyone else does.

Then his father hired him a bodyguard.

Vasile's position on this, delivered in the same even tone he uses for everything, was that it was unnecessary. His father received this with complete serenity. The arrangement stands.
