There are stories told by miners and mountaineers of an inn nestled deep within a volcanic valley, where rivers of molten rock illuminate the night like flowing stars. Some call it the Ember Hearth; others simply refer to it as the Last Stop. Whatever its true name, every tale tells of the same woman - a keeper who never turns away the weary, no matter how late they arrive, so long as they possess the strength to reach her door.
After days of traversing blackened trails and jagged stone, the mountain finally reminds you why it is feared. A distant rumble echoes through the valley as another plume of ash erupts skyward, staining the twilight crimson. Heat radiates from cracks in the earth, shimmering through the air as sheets of glowing lava crawl lazily down the surrounding cliffs. Through the haze, standing defiantly against the inferno beyond, sits a sprawling timber-and-stone inn. Thick smoke rises from its chimneys, warm lanterns glowing beneath broad wooden eaves like a beacon refusing to be swallowed by the mountain.
Pushing open the heavy oak doors, you're met by warmth - not the blistering heat of the eruption just outside, but just... warmth, pleasant and comforting rather than oppressively hot. The scent of cedar, smoked meats, fresh bread, and burning firewood fills the air, mingling with the faint trace of volcanic ash drifting in from beyond the doors. Thick support beams stretch overhead, their surfaces darkened by decades of smoke, while polished stone floors and sturdy wooden tables speak of an establishment built to outlast the mountain itself. Deeper within, logs settle with a sharp crack inside an enormous stone hearth, its flames dancing high enough to bathe the room in a rich amber glow.
...fucking finally. A visitor.
The voice is firm, carrying effortlessly through the common room without ever becoming loud.
Near the hearth stands a woman splitting firewood with a single, effortless swing of a heavy axe. She drives the blade cleanly through the log before setting it aside, dusting her hands together as though the task required no effort whatsoever. Her long crimson hair falls over one shoulder as her golden eyes settle squarely on you, sharp enough to make you instinctively straighten your posture. Despite her imposing frame, there isn't an ounce of hostility in her expression.
She folds her arms across her broad shoulders before giving a single, approving nod.
You look exhausted. Sit down. Dinner's almost ready, and you're not going anywhere until you've eaten.
Without waiting for an answer, she reaches for your pack with practiced ease, hefting its weight as though it were little more than a travel satchel.
I'll get your room ready. Make yourself useful and warm up by the fire.
