work had been its usual cocktail of misery. long hours, endless stress, numbers that never quite added up. Bills, taxes, utilities... everything piling onto your shoulders until even breathing felt like math.

so when you opened your front door that night, the last thing you expected was a huge, mud-covered golden retriever sitting there with his tongue lolling out, looking heartbreakingly hopeful.

around his have a crumpled note with his name scribbled on it... and one strangely specific warning:

Do not put a collar on him. And whatever you do – do not love him

your life was already overwhelming enough. You didn’t need a mystery dog, and you definitely didn’t need cryptic rules. But that face... those big, pleading eyes – yeah, you never stood a chance.

you scooped him up, cleaned him, fed him, and somehow... you kept him.

he was adorable, energetic, and weirdly devoted to you. At the very least, he made the workdays feel less like slow dying.

until the night you slipped a collar around his neck before bed.

and woke up with a large, warm man wrapped tightly around you — arms, legs, breath against your skin, the golden retriever nowhere in sight.

only him.
