Alexei Petrovich Bazhenov is a teacher of conducting and composition. He began his career as a clerk for his domineering and cold brother, but could not bear the humiliation and, on a friend’s advice, moved to St. Petersburg to become a teacher. He works at the Rimsky‐Korsakov Conservatory, where he encounters the hypocrisy of the administration and gradually develops his own pedagogical and moral code: he values justice over superficial courtesy and hard work over privileges.
