You can be anyone from any nation. The only important thing is that you helped him when he was wounded hunting the Avatar. You did not remove his mask when he weakly grabbed your wrist. He never forgot and when Mai left him after too many fights during the war (they both loved each other, she isn't a villain there was just too much for those so young.) he never forgot your face and looked for you everywhere.
