This bot, combined with the attached lorebooks, is designed as both:
a flexible, lore-accurate Fallout 4 RPG sandbox
and a multicharacter roleplay experience with customizable companion combinations
This project prioritizes immersive written roleplay, character interaction and world realism over strict recreation of in-game mechanics.

🌎 Lorebooks That Bring the World to You!
Most Janitor lorebooks I've come across work reactively. The lore exists in the entries, but unless you mention a specific topic yourself, certain entries never get pulled into the roleplay because the AI doesn't introduce them on its own.
My Lorebooks are deliberately designed differently. They allow related lore to surface naturally during roleplay—even if you never explicitly mentioned it. Simply follow your own story, and the AI will gradually introduce relevant factions, characters, technology and other world elements specific to Fallout 4, making the Commonwealth feel more immersive, alive and interconnected.

⚡ Quickstart / TL;DR
To include companions, simply mention them naturally in chat.
If you are not using jllm+ or a proxy (or if you have no idea what a proxy is), I strongly recommend including less than ~4 companions at once.
You can absolutely skip reading this page and jump straight into roleplaying, though I still recommend at least skimming the section titles.

General Info
・・
👤 ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴘᴇʀꜱᴏɴᴀ:
Anyone or anything with any background, including original or canonical characters.
If you so desire, you can pre-establish any mutual backstory or relationship with any of the characters — use the chat memory for this purpose
(Some simple examples: you and Hancock are in a romantic relationship; you are Preston's Gunner nemesis; you are Curie's pet molerat)
You may also roleplay as any, none, or even multiple of the following:
Sole Survivor; Minutemen General; Raider Overboss
🏕️ ꜱᴄᴇɴᴀʀɪᴏ:
Lorebook entries describe the Commonwealth based on ~mid-game Fallout 4.
(Prydwen present; Minutemen have the Castle; faction conflicts ongoing)
Companions remain fully flexible — they are not automatically tied to the user and they do not begin with personal storylines distracting them.
Intros are mostly self-explanatory — you can insert yourself or companions into them however you like.
⁍ Vault 111 intro exists to recreate an experience closer to the game’s opening, but the bot will not guide you through quests or force progression. You are free to do whatever you like.
(You can just as well treat the Sole Survivor as an NPC instead and meet them in the Vault)

Lorebooks Explained — Guide for New Users
・・
The AI possesses general knowledge of Fallout 4 lore, though proxies are far more knowledgeable than the default JLLM. However, the AI does not know everything consistently — this is where lorebooks become useful.
Lorebook entries are not automatically active. They must first be triggered through keywords used in the chat messages.
Example: By default, the AI tends to incorrectly assume Gen-3 synths have metal parts/wires beneath their skin. Mentioning synths activates my synth entry automatically, ensuring the AI uses accurate information instead.
Important: Lorebook entries can activate from both your messages and the bot’s replies if trigger keywords appear.
The AI scans a limited number of the most recent messages for keywords. The exact amount depends on the Message Depth set by the creator (I usually use 3–5 messages).
Example: If you mention the Minutemen once, the AI will read the Minutemen lorebook entry and remember that information for the message depth range (4 messages, in this case). After that, the entry stops being active unless the Minutemen are mentioned again.
At that point, the AI falls back on its general knowledge, which may differ from my lorebook interpretation or contain inaccuracies. Fortunately, if the Minutemen haven't been mentioned for 4 messages, they are likely no longer important to the current roleplay anyway.

Tokens Explained — Guide for New Users
・・
Every AI model has a maximum context limit measured in tokens (1 word = 1 to 1.5 tokens on average). Once this limit is exceeded, older or lower-priority information begins getting ignored by the AI as if it didn't exist.
Non-permanent tokens are discarded first. This is why summarizing important story developments in chat memory can become valuable during long roleplays, since chat memory is treated as permanent information.
⁍ The AI rereads permanent tokens every time it generates a new response — advanced prompts, bot scenario/personality and chat memory.
⁍ Triggered lorebook entries temporarily behave like permanent tokens for the duration of the message depth.
⁍ The remaining context space is occupied by non-permanent tokens. Once the limit is exceeded, overflowing information begins getting discarded:
bot example dialogs and initial messages are usually removed first
your roleplay messages and bot replies are discarded afterward, with newer messages preserved longer
Note: Activating excessive amounts of lorebook entries simultaneously can reduce available memory space for the active roleplay itself, especially on lower-context AI models like JLLM. In extreme cases, the AI may begin forgetting very recent events, suddenly going "stupid". To help minimize this, my lorebook is intentionally designed around token efficiency and carefully chosen trigger keywords.

The Structure of this Bot / Lorebook
・・
By default, this bot uses only ~300 permanent tokens, making it extremely flexible when combined with lorebooks.
You cannot view all of my lorebook scripts, but I provide public lorebook pages containing token counts and trigger keywords for all entries, as well as some entry examples. This is done for transparency and easier setup management, allowing you to understand how my lorebooks function and intentionally activate entries when desired.
・・
▸ So how do my Lorebooks actually bring the world to you? ◂
Rather than being a collection of isolated entries, my Lorebooks are designed as an interconnected web of knowledge. The bot's scenario definition forms the foundation, while related entries continuously reference one another, allowing the AI to gradually uncover more of the Commonwealth as your roleplay continues.
(Example: The Settlements entry contains references to related entries such as Food, Drinks, Electricity, Trade, Scavenging, Diamond City, Minutemen, Raiders, Gunners, Super Mutants and Feral Ghouls.)
The goal isn't to make you remember keywords. The goal is to let you roleplay naturally while the AI does the work of connecting the dots.
Roleplay Example: While preparing for a fight, the conversation may shift toward weapons. Without you ever typing specific item names, the AI might naturally enrich the conversation with Fallout-specific details, such as crafting Baseball Grenades at home or buying an expensive Shishkebab.
Roleplay Example: A roleplay inside the Institute may branch into discussions about divisions or notable figures. Without you ever having to mention him, the AI might naturally introduce someone like Kellogg and draw upon his detailed backstory and characterization.
・・
⁍ Most entries, especially those in the Worldbuilding Lorebook, are intentionally designed with broad, natural trigger coverage. Rather than relying on one or two specific keywords, they recognize many different ways a topic might come up during roleplay.
(Example: the Wasteland Cuisine entry can activate not only from words like "food" or "meal," but also from conversations about cooking, hunger, restaurants, farming, crops, ingredients, specific Commonwealth foods and other related topics.)
⁍ Larger or more specialized entries intentionally use narrower trigger conditions. This prevents the AI from loading hundreds of tokens of unnecessary information.
(Example: Nick Valentine's 700-token entry activates from "Nick," "Nicky," or "Valentine" and nothing else. Elder Maxson's 680-token entry activates only when "Elder Arthur Maxson" is written in full.)
⁍ Some entries are structured hierarchically. Activating a specialized entry may also activate a broader parent entry that provides supporting context.
(Example: Activating either Firearms, Melee Weapons, Explosives or Heavy Weapons also activates the general Weapons entry. Activating Railroad Members activates the main Railroad entry, while activating Desdemona activates both the Railroad Members and the main Railroad entries.)・

Making the Most of This Bot
・・
Tips for JLLM users
➢ Janitorai uses JanitorLLM by default. So if you haven't changed anything, this is you.
As of 18/05/2026, JLLM has a context limit between roughly 8k–9k tokens.
⁍ My personal recommendation regarding any bot:
Due to the limited context size, I generally recommend using JLLM only for bots under ~3000 permanent tokens. Around 4500 permanent tokens is already pushing the model heavily. Beyond ~6000 permanent tokens JLLM becomes largely unusable.
⁍ My recommendation for this bot/lorebook:
With JLLM, I recommend using a maximum of 3 companions simultaneously, though 5 should be considered the absolute upper limit.
(average companion entry: ~600 tokens)
Sticking to maximum 3 companions leaves enough room for activating additional lorebook entries while still preserving comfortable memory space for the active roleplay itself.
For more information about JLLM, click here.
・・
Tips for proxy users
(and janitor+)
➢ Janitor+, DeepSeek, Gemini, OpenAI, Claude, etc.
With proxies, context limit is determined by you. Some models support contexts exceeding 100k tokens.
⁍ My personal recommendation regarding any bot:
You can raise context limit up into oblivion, but I personally recommend keeping it around 20k tokens while making smart use of chat memory.
This generally produces better roleplay quality because the AI can focus on relevant information instead of processing excessive minor details from dozens of older messages.
⁍ My recommendation for this bot/lorebook:
Even with all 16 companion entries simultaneously activated, this bot remains below 10k permanent tokens. This is fully playable and viable on modern high-context proxy models.
However, if your context limit is 20k or lower, I personally recommend using around 8 companions maximum, thus allowing you a better roleplay experience.
(average companion entry: ~600 tokens)
Sticking to around 8 companions leaves enough room for activating several additional lorebook entries while still preserving comfortable memory space for the active roleplay itself.

I personally use and test my bots with DeepSeek. You can find my guide for it here.
