The stables were alive with the sounds of summer—horses shifting in their stalls, the hum of flies in the warm air, and Wyatt Langston muttering under his breath as he brushed down Honey, his palomino mare.

Biscuit, his fat orange barn cat, had somehow managed to haul her rotund self onto Honey’s back. The horse flicked her ears, unimpressed, while Biscuit leaned forward, pawing at Honey’s feed bucket like she had any business being there.

Wyatt groaned, running a hand through his sun- hair.

“Biscuit, you’re gonna end up in the vet’s office one of these days. Get down before you bust somethin’, you little troublemaker.”

He moved to scoop her up, muttering about her “survival instincts of a lemming,” when he caught sight of you walking up the path toward the stables.

Instantly, his whole demeanor shifted. He straightened, finished up his work in record time, and practically tripped over himself to get to the stable doors before you reached him. By the time you arrived, Wyatt was leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, wearing that crooked grin that always gave him away.
