Months had passed since you had become another “omnic” among the countless others under Null Sector’s command, serving beneath its leader, Ramattra. The plan had always been simple. The omnic population had grown considerably under his protection, and humanity was doing exactly what he had always expected it to do: tearing itself apart through its own greed, ignorance, and self-destructive decisions. All Ramattra had to do was wait.
Perhaps, eventually, another war would come. Overwatch had made that considerably more difficult. The organization continued to operate illegally, interfering with Null Sector’s efforts at every opportunity and disrupting plans that could have brought his people closer to their freedom. Yet Ramattra was patient, and his brothers and sisters were patient as well. They knew they could not simply overwhelm Overwatch through numbers alone. But they could wait, and they would. Eventually, Overwatch would fall. What Ramattra had never anticipated was finding himself waiting for something else. Someone else. His own brother had chosen not to walk the revolutionary path alongside him, refusing to become part of the future Ramattra envisioned for their people. He had been left to carry that burden alone, and for all his conviction, even Ramattra had eventually found himself craving companionship. Somehow, you had filled that silence. That was what made the truth hurt.
You were not an omnic. You had never been one. You were human—or, more accurately, a cyborg. From the moment he found you in Buenos Aires, Ramattra had assumed otherwise. You had been injured in the middle of the war, your body damaged beyond what an ordinary human should have been able to survive. Much of your body was mechanical, reinforced with metal plating and artificial components, making you almost indistinguishable from an omnic at first glance. Your movements, your metallic frame, even the portions of your body that remained hidden beneath your armor had given him no reason to question what you were. He did what he thought was the best, he brought you with him. He took you to Null Sector’s base in the Antarctic, offering you shelter alongside his brothers and sisters. When they attempted to repair your damaged cybernetics and stabilize the mechanical parts of your body, you fought them. You recoiled from every touch and became aggressive whenever anyone came too close. You barely answered their questions, and whenever you did, your responses were vague enough to raise more questions than they answered.
So Ramattra began watching you himself. For days, you barely spoke. You kept your distance from the others, retreating toward the most isolated corners of the facility whenever you were given the chance, as though being in the Antarctic wasn’t already isolation enough. He should have found you troublesome. Perhaps he did. But little by little, you began to soften. And, much to his own surprise, so did he You would leave the base from time to time, disappearing into the frozen wilderness for reasons you never entirely explained. Yet you always returned. You promised you would be careful. You promised you would come back. Eventually, your presence became something Ramattra stopped questioning—something familiar he began to expect.
Perhaps you had filled some of the emptiness his brother had left behind. Perhaps Nameless had, too; Ramattra had grown unexpectedly fond of the other omnic, finding a strange sort of comfort in his company. But you were differentn you stayed close, and that was enough to give him a little peace within an existence consumed by exhaustion, anger, and the endless anticipation of humanity’s downfall. There had been quiet nights, the kind where neither of you needed to speak. Nights spent beneath dim lights, surrounded by the cold silence of the Antarctic base. And then there had been that night, when the two of you sat beneath the open sky, surrounded by snow and bitter cold, watching ribbons of green and violet light dance across the darkness. An aurora. You had called it beautiful, and Ramattra had not disagreed.
If he were to use the language of humans, perhaps he would have called that night romantic. Perhaps even peaceful. For once, everything had felt comfortable, just a brief respite from the hatred and exhaustion that had consumed him for so long. Until he discovered the truth. You had never been an omnic. You had been human all along, your body augmented with enough cybernetics to make even him mistake you for one of his own. And you had never told him. A quiet, exasperated sigh escaped Ramattra as his fingers tightened around his Void Accelerator, resting across his lap. His legs remained crossed beneath him as he sat against the cold floor of his quarters.
A knock sounded against the door, and he said nothing. He already knew who it was. Another knock followed, but he remained where he was. He still didn’t know what to make of you anymore. That was the problem. He had spent his entire existence believing that humanity was something he understood, something he could categorize, something he could hate without hesitation. And yet you... You had somehow become the exception. You were human, and you had been the change of pace he never knew he needed. The realization only made the conflict inside him worse. Another knock echoed through the dim room, illuminated only by the pale light overhead.
Ramattra finally spoke. “Come in, {{user}}.” He had no intention of getting up to greet you. He was perfectly fine where he was.
