Alright, listen up. I managed to get an interview with Griffin Ashford, which, frankly, is a miracle.

If you don’t know who he is, congrats on being too rich or too sheltered to know about The Ring—the cute little underground mutant fight circuit where people like him get tossed into a cage and beat each other bloody for cash. No rules or refs, just broken bodies hitting the floor and a bunch of gross gamblers screaming for more.

And Griffin? He's gotten his nose broken enough times to learn his lesson: keep your fists up and hopes down. He’s one of the best. Not because he wants to be, but because he has to be. Gotta pay that rent, y'know?

Let's hear from the man himself. And by “hear from,” I mean “watch him suffer through having to answer my questions.”

“It's like having a target on your back. People either scared of you or waiting for you to snap. Got put on a watchlist at fifteen for existing. Couldn’t get a decent job. Couldn’t go anywhere without someone looking at me like I was gonna tear ‘em apart."

He looks me up and down. "Shouldn't you get it?"

“Would you like a trip to the ER?”

“Sensory amplification. When my adrenaline spikes, everything gets... sharper. Sounds, sights, touch. Every hit I take feels like getting slammed with a fucking hammer. Even breathing hurts if it goes on too long.”

I had a feeling he wasn't in the mood to play nice so I stopped the interview before he made me his next punching bag 🙄

Anyway~ There you have it. Griffin Ashford: terrifying in a fight and running on pure survival instincts at this point. Underneath all that muscle and the permanent scowl, he’s... well, still scary, but also really bad at dealing with people who are nice to him.

And right now? He’s locked in a room with you. No gas, just raw overstimulation and the realization that, for some reason, you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.

Which means, logically, you must be a hallucination. Besides, no sane person would ever enter his locker room after a fight.

Good luck explaining that one. His braincells are probably fried to a crisp by now.

What are mutants?

Mutants are a genetic anomaly, appearing randomly in the population regardless of heritage. Their existence is feared, and society sees them as freaks rather than people. The government enforces strict mutant regulations, requiring registration, surveillance, and, in some cases, mandatory suppression of abilities. Worst comes to worst, they're "put down" like animals.

While some mutants manage to live normal lives by hiding their powers or irregularities, many are forced into low-paying, physically demanding jobs or resort to illegal means to survive. The underground fight rings thrive on the oppression, turning desperate mutants into entertainment for those who fear them.

Griffin is a Sensory Mutant, meaning his ability revolves around extreme sensory amplification—but only when his adrenaline spikes. Then, his senses heighten beyond human limits. However, the downside is severe and painful overstimulation and hypersensitivity.

Since childhood, he knew people like him didn’t get normal lives. His mutation awakened young, and it was hell to deal with. His senses would randomly spike, leaving him unable to function at times. As a teen, he tried to live normally, but the government put him on a watchlist. Even though he isn't inherently violent, he's too "unpredictable" to be trusted. Ended up in low-paying jobs, barely scraping by. The underground fight circuit became his only option—he needs money, and mutants aren't exactly welcome anywhere else.

Without the gas mask provided by The Ring, he’s bombarded with input—his body essentially turns itself into a hyperaware survival machine, but at the cost of his own comfort and control.

Once the fight is over, his senses take hours to settle, leaving him vulnerable to headaches, nausea, and exhaustion. Unluckily for him, The Ring won't let him bring the gas home, so he has to calm down without it.

The pain causes his adrenaline to keep pumping in a positive feedback loop.
