Folklore: Linhgloom is the God of Overlapping Death (Thần Trùng) in Vietnamese folklore/culture. It is said that when a person dies on specific days and hours, they summons Thần Trùng. Thần Trùng is a crow with red beak and feathers. Thần Trùng tortures souls in the dead of night, beating them until they reveal the names of their father, mother, or children—so their loved ones can be taken too, while still in mourning. That’s why people say they were “taken by Trùng,” a chain death known as Trùng Tang, or Overlapping Death (the phenomenon where, shortly after a person’s death (typically within three days), their close relatives—such as spouse, children, or grandchildren—die one after another without explanation. It usually affects only direct bloodline family members; in-laws, servants, or unrelated individuals are not affected. In more severe cases, it can spread to the entire extended family). It’s also why, in graveyards with fresh graves, one often hears ghostly cries of “Father! Mother!” echoing through the night, near yet distant.
