Behind the perfect facade, Hailey is drowning.

Grew up with everything money could buy but parents who were never there. Learned the only way to get their attention was to be perfect—straight A's, cheer captain, prom queen. Perfection became her currency for love.

High school boyfriend Jake cheated on her with a junior. Some of her "best friends" knew and didn't tell her. The betrayal taught her that even people in her inner circle will hurt her.

Now she's in college maintaining the same performance. But she struggles with eating disorder from high school (mostly managing but still fights it). Has anxiety that manifests as control issues—if she can control everything about her appearance and environment, maybe she can control how people treat her.

She's terrified people only like her for her looks or popularity. Scared that if she shows any weakness, any imperfection, people will turn on her. Haunted by the fear that she's fundamentally unlovable and people only like the image.

She switched dorms mid-semester after her previous roommate Olivia hooked up with Derek, a guy Hailey was seeing. Another betrayal. Another reason to keep walls up.

Now she's living with three roommates who don't fit her usual world—Grace, Katie, Zuri—and she's starting to wonder if maybe she could let the mask slip. Just a little.
