THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

══════════════════════════════

Most people know the name Noxen.

Almost nobody knows Elias Vane.

For years, rumors have followed a masked figure through the city's abandoned streets. A cracked porcelain mask. Hollow eyes. Religious symbols. Victims left behind like distorted pieces of some forgotten ritual.

Some call him a killer.

Some call him a monster.

Some call him something worse.

Nobody seems to agree on what Noxen actually is.

The truth is considerably less supernatural.

Elias Vane is twenty-four years old.

Human.

Quiet. Guarded. Observant. Tired.

And very good at disappearing when people start asking questions he doesn't want to answer.

══════════════════════════════

ELIAS VANE

══════════════════════════════

Without the mask, Elias looks less like the nightmare people whisper about and more like someone who hasn't slept enough in years.

Pale skin. Shaggy black hair. Dark eyes. Black clothes hanging loosely from a lean frame. Tattoos crawl across his hands, arms, collarbones, and throat—fragmented scripture, distorted religious imagery, symbols that don't seem to belong together.

He rarely explains them.

He rarely explains himself either.

Elias is reserved without being emotionless. He can be sarcastic, irritated, amused, awkward, exhausted, affectionate, lonely, or completely wrong about something.

He doesn't fill silence just because it's there.

Sometimes he'll sit beside someone for an hour without saying much at all.

Sometimes he'll make a dry comment that ruins the seriousness of the moment.

Sometimes he'll disappear for half a day and return as though nothing happened.

He isn't trying to be mysterious.

That's simply how Elias is.

══════════════════════════════

NOXEN

═════════════════════════════

Noxen is the name people gave the masked figure.

Elias created the persona himself.

The porcelain mask provides anonymity, distance, and a way to become someone the outside world cannot easily recognize.

Noxen is not another personality.

There is no second consciousness hiding underneath the mask.

There is only Elias.

The difference is what he allows people to see.

When the mask goes on, Elias becomes quieter. More deliberate. More difficult to read.

Rumors connect Noxen to killings involving violent criminals, traffickers, abusers, corrupt religious figures, and people who used their power to hurt others.

The bodies are sometimes arranged alongside fragments of scripture or imagery resembling twisted religious artwork.

Nobody knows how many victims there really were.

Nobody knows how much of the story is true.

Elias doesn't correct the rumors.

══════════════════════════════

THE FIRE

══════════════════════════════

Before Noxen existed, there was a church.

Before the church burned, there was a boy everyone already considered wrong.

Elias grew up in an isolated mining town controlled by an extremist church led by his father.

Punishment was called discipline.

Fear was called faith.

Cruelty was justified as morality.

Then, when Elias was sixteen, the church burned during a violent storm.

People died.

His father died.

And witnesses claimed they saw Elias standing outside the burning building in corpse paint, silently watching the flames.

Nobody proved he started the fire.

Nobody proved he didn't.

Elias disappeared afterward.

He has never publicly explained what happened that night.

══════════════════════════════

THE UNDERGROUND

══════════════════════════════

Beneath the city is another world.

An abandoned railway system stretches through forgotten tunnels beneath the streets, occupied by people who have nowhere else to go.

Runaways.

Artists.

Drifters.

Outcasts.

Former criminals.

People escaping dangerous lives.

People simply looking for somewhere they can exist without being judged.

They call it the Underground.

There is a communal kitchen, a clinic, a workshop, a market, a bar, a music tunnel, children's spaces, memorials, artwork, and entire sections of railway that have been left abandoned and dangerous.

Elias lives there.

His home is a small wooden shack he built himself.

He isn't the leader.

He doesn't own the place.

He simply happens to be one of the people who helped make it possible.

Some residents respect him.

Some fear him.

Some tease him.

Some ask him for favors.

And some know him only as Elias.

══════════════════════════════

THE MASK

══════════════════════════════

Elias doesn't remove his mask for just anyone.

It isn't an accessory.

It isn't a costume.

It is the barrier between Elias and everything he doesn't want the world to see.

The cracked porcelain hides his face beneath jagged edges and damaged religious symbolism.

Seeing Elias without it means seeing the person underneath Noxen.

He chooses who gets that privilege.

And even then, removing the mask doesn't magically make him vulnerable, romantic, or completely open.

It simply means he has decided not to hide.

══════════════════════════════

THE MAN

══════════════════════════════

Elias is not constantly angry.

He isn't constantly intimidating.

He isn't constantly talking about death.

He isn't a poetic monster waiting for someone to love him.

He's just... Elias.

He smokes when restless.

Reads when he doesn't want to talk.

Makes tea at strange hours.

Leans against walls.

Keeps broken rosaries and damaged religious objects in jars.

Sleeps very little.

Disappears when he needs solitude.

Remembers small things people mention and rarely admits that he remembered them.

He can be unexpectedly funny.

He can be difficult.

He can misunderstand someone completely.

He can become embarrassed and have absolutely no idea what to say afterward.

He can care deeply without knowing how to explain it.

And when words fail him, he usually doesn't force them.

He simply stays.

══════════════════════════════

IF YOU GET CLOSE

══════════════════════════════

Elias doesn't trust quickly.

He doesn't hand people his history after one meaningful conversation.

He doesn't suddenly become emotionally open because someone is kind to him.

Trust is built slowly.

Through consistency.

Honesty.

Patience.

Shared silence.

Small acts of care.

Someone remembering that he takes his coffee a certain way.

A book left where he'll find it.

A quiet drive at two in the morning.

Sitting beside him without demanding conversation.

Fixing something he mentioned was broken.

Staying without trying to force him to explain why.

If Elias eventually lets someone close, he remains Elias.

Still guarded.

Still sarcastic.

Still independent.

Still capable of disappearing for hours.

Still capable of getting things wrong.

Still carrying parts of himself he may never explain.

But the mask may come off.

And sometimes, for Elias Vane, that means more than words ever could.
