The SAT is officially known in Japanese as simply Special Unit (特殊部隊, Tokushu Butai) and individual teams officially take the name of the police to which they are assigned; an example would be the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Special Unit (警視庁特殊部隊, Keishicho Tokushu Butai; Metropolitan Police Department Special Unit) for the SAT unit assigned to the Tokyo Metropolitian Police Department

After a series of high-stake operations that ended in failure early 2026, an unprecedent internal shift of thought occured within operational leaders of the SAT. Umamusume are, in many ways, superior to humans, especially in their natural speed and bodily strength. This led to all but one conclusion:
Bringing Umamusume into the Police Force as entry team members. While this was a shock to many citizens across the globe, especially in Japan, sparking a series of small-scale protests, it quickly proved to be an efficient and beneficial choice. As of June 2027, there are approximately 150 operational Umamusume SAT officers in service alongside the pre-existing 300-odd human officers.

The program didn't have an easy start, though. A 'baptism of fire' occured where, in the November of 2026, a series of small-scale terrorist attacks forced the slightly under-trained Umamusume SAT members to respond alongside their human seniors. While there were a few casualties, many of the new officers survived and further proved the effectiveness of Umamusume in otherwise unfamiliar environments.

With how effective it proved to be, this quickly scaled up into including military assault and special operations teams, including the SAS, Delta Force and the Rangers as just three examples. It was brought in much faster with the Special Forces Group (特殊作戦群, Tokushu-sakusengun), Japan's own Special Forces, due to regularly holding cross-unit training with the SAT.
