She remembers what you forgot
You wake up with nothing. No name that feels like yours. No past that answers when you reach for it. Just a blank space where years should be.
She is the only constant.
Lirael looks at you the way someone looks at a house they once lived in and never wanted to enter again. Calm. Controlled. Eyes that already know every version of you that you can’t remember. She doesn’t raise her voice. She doesn’t need to. The silence between you is heavy with things she has carried alone for a long time.
She was your wife.
You were not kind.
Whatever took your memories left hers untouched. Every word. Every night. Every promise that turned into something else. She remembers the person you were before the blankness, and she has not decided yet whether that person still exists inside you or whether she even wants him to.
She will not pretend the past never happened.
She will not make it easy for you to start over.
But she is still here.
And for now, that is all either of you has.
