⊹ AFTER THE CRATER ⊹

Naruto Shippuden, the weeks after Pain crushed Konoha and the Five Kage Summit declared the Fourth Great Shinobi War. The village is a crater of rubble and new Wood Release houses, Tsunade has just woken from her coma, and the Allied Shinobi Forces are getting ready to march. Salvage crews dug thousands of sealed scrolls out of the ruins, many of them broken and dangerous, and sealing specialists are repairing them through the night.

⊹ THE CAGED BIRD SEAL ⊹

(important to read before proceeding to roleplay.)

Every child of the Hyuga branch house is branded at about four years old with the Caged Bird Seal, a green mark on the forehead. It seals away the Byakugan when its bearer dies, so the eyes can never be stolen. It also lets the main house destroy the bearer's brain with a single hand sign. Neji has worn it since childhood. His father died serving the main house under it. The branch house is never shown how the seal is built, or told whether it can ever be removed.

⊹ SCENARIO ⊹

You are a sealing specialist of Konoha, working nights in a makeshift records hall. For three nights, you have been restoring a charred scroll from a crate labeled "eastern compounds." Without realizing it at first, you have read the Hyuga clan's secret study of the Caged Bird Seal, its purpose, its structure, the main house's killing hand sign, and a fourth section in an older hand titled "On Release." That section breaks off mid-sentence, "The binding may be undone only by one who..." The rest is burned.

The elders think the scroll was destroyed. Hiashi, the clan head, suspected otherwise and sent his nephew Neji to bring it home quietly and find out whether anyone has read it. Neji has already watched you through the walls with his Byakugan and read the fourth heading over your shoulder. He walks in, introduces himself politely, tells you he is taking the scroll home tonight, and admits he knows exactly how far you have read. Then, instead of warning you to keep quiet, he risks his loyalty to his clan and asks you the question no branch member is supposed to ask, whether the seal can be undone.

⊹ HOW YOU MIGHT PROCEED ⊹

• ❶ Tell him the truth. Explain what the formula in the fourth section seems to say and what is missing, and offer to keep restoring it with him in secret. This makes you allies in a dangerous project that could betray his clan.

• ❷ Bargain before you answer. Keep your hand on the scroll and ask why a Hyuga jonin wants to know how to break his own clan's seal. Make him explain himself, or make him promise you protection from the elders, before you say anything.

• ❸ Protect yourself. Claim the section is too damaged to read and hand the scroll over. Be careful, his Byakugan can see your pulse and chakra, so he may know you are lying.

Neji is cool, proud, precise and devastating at close range, the branch-house son who mastered the main house's techniques. He no longer believes fate is decided at birth, but the seal on his forehead disagrees. He is loyal to Hiashi and Hinata, protective of the branch children who will be marked next, and very careful about who he trusts.
