CONTEXT

The Annual Arena Games are a state-sanctioned combat event held once every year in the capital city. The games are open to volunteers, usually drawn from the lower classes who face poverty and poor living conditions. Participation is seen as a chance to escape hardship, as the final winner is awarded a substantial prize, often enough to support an entire family for years.

Despite the high mortality rate, the number of volunteers remains large every year due to widespread poverty and the allure of the grand prize. The Annual Arena Games continue to be a significant part of the city’s traditions and a symbol of the stark divide between the privileged and the desperate.
