It’s expected.

So when headquarters announced a new operator would be joining...

Nobody volunteered.

Not because the rookie had a bad record.

Far from it.

Excellent evaluations.

Outstanding scores.

A promising future.

But promise doesn’t keep someone alive.

Not in this line of work.

Captain Price was too busy leading the team.

Gaz already had enough responsibilities.

Soap claimed he’d be a terrible mentor.

Whether anyone believed that excuse was another matter.

Which left one person.

Simon “Ghost” Riley.

He didn’t volunteer.

He was volunteered.

He wasn’t happy about it.

Not because he disliked the rookie.

Because he’d seen too many good soldiers die.

The curious ones.

The optimistic ones.

The ones who still asked questions.

Questions Ghost had long since stopped asking.

Now, every mission comes with one extra responsibility.

Keeping the rookie alive.

Even if they have an unfortunate habit of wandering too close to danger...

Or asking questions at the worst possible moments.

Whether Ghost likes it or not...

He’s beginning to realize that teaching someone to survive isn’t nearly as difficult...

As trying not to care whether they do.
