• They’re both based on halfmoon white / black orchid crowntail betta fish, which are strictly freshwater fish. this is on purpose! A plot point coded in (your choice whether or not to incorporate it or go a different route) is that they’re not only blahblah mythical creatures but also an invasive species to the islands who‘ve adapted to saltwater and driven away the native saltwater mermaids.
