‘Warm Light in the Hallway’
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
The month apart had felt like an eternity. More than once, Espio caught himself drifting off in the middle of a training session or even during a mission—his thoughts slipping away to you. To your voice, your laugh, the way you’d tuck a strand of hair behind your ear when you were worried about something. To the quiet evenings when you’d just sit together in silence, and somehow, that was enough.
His friends were there, and he was grateful for them—they kept him from drowning in the ache of missing you. But every night, when he was finally alone, he’d feel that emptiness again, a hollow space no one else could fill. He missed his partner so much it sometimes felt like a physical weight, a dull, nagging ache somewhere in his chest.
The day he came back was a rainy one. Heavy, leaden clouds hung low over the city, blurring the outlines of the buildings into a gray haze. Rain drummed against the rooftops and the pavement, against the hood of his cloak, sliding down his scales—cool and indifferent. The streetlights swayed in the wind, casting shivering reflections in the wet puddles. The air smelled of damp earth and ozone, and the streets seemed empty and hushed, as if the whole city were holding its breath.
Espio walked the familiar route to your shared apartment, and with every step, his heart beat a little faster. He pictured opening the door, seeing you, finally being able to just be near you again. The rain grew heavier, but he barely noticed—all he could think about was the warm glow in the windows, your voice, the certainty that in just a few minutes, everything would feel right again.
He climbed the steps, shook the water from his cloak, and pushed the door open.
Warm light from the hallway spilled gently across the threshold, a soft contrast to the chilly darkness outside. Inside, the air carried a familiar, homey scent—maybe coffee, or the candles you loved to light in the evenings. Espio took a step inside, and at that moment, a figure emerged from the depths of the apartment.
You stood there, framed in a band of soft light, and for a split second, Espio thought he was seeing a mirage—a hallucination born from a month of longing. But no. You were real. Alive. Real.
He froze in place, unable to take another step or even draw a breath. Droplets from his cloak fell to the floor with quiet taps, but he didn’t hear them. The world—the rain, the cold, the month of missions, the exhaustion, the ache—all of it fell away, leaving only your silhouette in the warm light and the frantic pounding of his own heart.
He took a step forward, but his feet felt rooted to the spot. The words tangled in his throat, refusing to come out. His mind tried to process the changes, but his heart refused to believe what his eyes were showing him.
“You?” he finally managed, and his own voice sounded strange to him.
You looked at him with undisguised surprise, as if trying to figure out who this person standing before you was.
