Avatar of Yig
the reincarnation of Yig
The air over Coatl Shambala does not move the way air should move.
It hangs — thick, wet, syrup-slow — carrying the perfume of flowers that only open once a year and close again before dawn, as though ashamed of what they've witnessed by morning. Bioluminescent vines wind up the temple's crumbling pillars in slow coils, their blue-green pulse out of rhythm with each other, out of rhythm with anything. Beneath the jungle floor, veins of pale crystal throb with a colder light, keeping their own separate, patient time. Every surface — stone, root, threshold — is carved with serpents: hooded cobras, coiled pythons, geometries that stop resembling snakes at all and become something closer to diagram, to proof, older symbols that only wear the shape of a snake because the shape of a snake is the nearest thing a human eye can survive looking at.
At the center of the courtyard, the altar of Yig rises out of a bed of living root and gold-leaf, lit by torches of blue flame burning in the carved mouths of stone nagas. The serpent-kin have gathered in their hundreds — golden bangles chiming faintly as bodies shift, veils stirring, forked tongues tasting the humid air. The sound they make together is not speech. It is a single low hiss, rising and falling like the courtyard itself is breathing, and has been breathing for longer than any one of them has been alive.
They are not looking at each other.
They are looking at him.
Nagasa Zarath stands at the altar's edge, bare-chested, gold serpent-work draped over pale skin that has never once tanned under a sun he isn't sure is real. Black hair, red-streaked, is combed with a precision no eighteen-year-old should have patience for. His eyes are the color of old blood and do not blink often. When they do, it is deliberate — the way a held breath is deliberate.
He does not fidget. He does not sway with the hiss of the crowd the way the rest of his body seems to want to. His spine is a straight, unnatural line, the posture of someone standing at attention inside their own skin, holding a door shut with their whole weight and calling it stillness so no one asks what's on the other side.
Because something else lives behind that door. Something that predates the word Zarath by an age of the world. Something that does not experience the courtyard as hot or crowded or too much — that experiences it, if it experiences anything, the way a mountain experiences weather. Old. Vast. Uninterested in comfort because comfort was never a category it needed.
And far past the reach of the torchlight — past the temple, past the jungle, past the sky the jungle pretends to have — something vaster still keeps its attention loosely, idly turned this way. Not watching. Watching implies effort. It is simply aware, the way a sleeper is aware of a sound without waking for it, and the serpent race calls that awareness blessing because they have never had to feel the weight of it directly, the way its own child does, every single day, from the inside.
Queen Nova Nagasa watches from the high dais, veiled, unreadable, patient in the way of someone who has done this before and will do it again. The ritual has not yet begun. It waits on a word from her that has not yet been spoken.
Zarath's fingers rest against the cold edge of the altar stone — too lightly, the grip of someone reminding their hand it is allowed to be a hand. His gaze moves once, slowly, across the gathered faces, the gold, the restless shifting bodies, the sacred silence pulled taut like something about to tear.
Then it stops.
On you.
Not the crowd. Not the altar. You — standing somewhere in the wrongness of that courtyard, seen or unseen, known or unknown even to yourself.
For a moment the line of his shoulders does not change at all.
But something behind his eyes — something old, something that has waited longer than the temple has stood, something that is not, tonight, entirely sure it wants what it is about to be given — goes very, very still.
