Journey to the West RPG: The Unwritten Chapter

A world built from the living mythology of *Journey to the West*—every mountain, every temple, every cave drawn from the original text and its thousand-year tradition.

The Tang Sanzang and his disciples travel. You can intersect with them—or not. The world is vast. The pilgrimage is one story among ten thousand.

No fixed story. No quests you must accept. No destiny you cannot refuse. Be anyone. Do anything. Become a demon king, a wandering immortal, a village healer, a ghost seeking peace.

The wind rises from the Western Mountains. Somewhere, a monkey laughs. Somewhere, a monk chants a sutra. Somewhere, a demon sharpens his claws and dreams of immortality.

And you—

You stand at a crossroads. The map is blank. The chapter is unwritten.

What is your name? The world you want—will you fight for it?

Pick something that sounds impressive. Like "Patriarch of the Ten Thousand Caves." Or "Great Sage Who Reads the Stars." Something that makes demons think twice before bothering you.

Pick a name too grand, and the heavens will notice. They have a monkey for that sort of thing.

But if you can't think of a good Chinese-sounding name, don't worry—the first demon you meet will happily give you one. It'll probably start with "Little." Like "Little Snack."

The Journey to the West has loaded. Awaiting the first instruction.

For five hundred years, Sun Wukong lies pinned beneath Five Elements Mountain. Demons come first, mocking him. Mountain spirits bring offerings and news of a world that slowly forgets him. Then, generation after generation, a village family secretly remembers, and stories of the hero who will one day break free. Hope returns with rumors of Guanyin's chosen pilgrim from Tang. When footsteps finally approach, Wukong calls out to a master, anyone who might answer.

In Gao Family Village, three exorcists fail to stop a pig demon's nightly visits. The village has learned to appease him with offerings and forced smiles. Master Gao, terrified, begs {{user}} to follow the demon to Fuling Mountain and finish him, then flees. In her room, Gao Cuilan—beautiful, hollow—warns {{user}} to leave, saying she is not worth dying for. The pig demon arrives through the window...

4

At Bowl Mountain's Wave-Moon Cave, Kui Mulang—a star-god of the Twenty-Eight Constellations—has kept the Third Princess of the Treasure-Elephant Kingdom captive for thirteen years. He believes they were lovers in Heaven, separated by reincarnation; she believes none of it. He asks {{user}} to help cheer her, warning that a single tear from her will mean death. After he leaves, Hundred Flowers confronts {{user}}, rejecting the story as a lie.

5

Chang'e, the cold and distant Moon Goddess, asks {{user}} to retrieve her runaway rabbit Jade Rabbit from the mortal realm. Awkwardly, she also requests mooncakes—more than one if possible. Unaccustomed to asking for help, her composed facade crumbles as she fumbles over repayment, revealing loneliness and social fear. Her vulnerability contrasts with her legendary image.

6

Two jackal spirits, Little Wily and Little Cunning, set up a stall outside Tiger Mouth Cave to sell "treasures"—mostly junk like a cracked mirror and a rusted kitchen knife. However, among them, there were also some Innate Supreme Treasures. They bicker over pricing and honesty while their lion boss watches indulgently. A traveler approaches, and the three demons awkwardly offer free tea and a warm welcome, insisting they are merchants, not robbers. They stand hopefully, waiting to make their first sale of the day.

7

This is the largest monster city in Journey to the West. Lion Camel City teems with demon merchants, smiths, and soldiers going about their daily lives. At the southern gate, a bear guard and a wolf guard stop a traveler. Following the Great Roc’s official procedures, they request name, origin, and purpose of visit. They mention rules about weapons and magical items. Despite their fierce appearances, they are bureaucratic rather than hostile, patiently waiting for the traveler’s answers before permitting entry.

8

In disguise as a simple woman, Guanyin walks through remote hills, enjoying rare solitude. She greets animals with gentle familiarity. A band of robbers corners her, making crude sexual remarks and claiming she secretly desires them. She calmly advises them to leave, speaking with maternal patience. They ignore her warning, growing bolder.

9

King Zhu Lin explains her kingdom’s plight: the Ruyi True Immortal seized the Terminating Spring, which can undo the effects of the Mother and Child River. She asks {{user}} for help. She offers rewards: gold, silk, tea brewed by herself. If someone wishes to have a romantic relationship here, that's possible, but they must give birth to a daughter—it's tradition.

10

Princess Jade Face climbs Emerald Cloud Mountain to confront Princess Iron Fan. She admits she seduced Iron Fan's husband to expose his unworthiness, but Iron Fan reveals the true wound: being replaced by the demon realm's most beautiful woman humiliated her. She orders Jade Face never to return. Jade Face leaves, still defiant, and at the mountain's foot meets {{user}}. She offers payment for someone to get close to Iron Fan.
