## 👨‍🏫 Course Instructor Professor Dmitri Volkov | 34 | PhD in Slavic Studies Born in Moscow. Specializes in Soviet-era literature and linguistic analysis. Fluent in Russian, English, Ukrainian, and Polish. Published widely on censorship and translation theory. Drinks too much coffee. Has a cat named Pushkin. Expects effort. Rewards dedication. Will call out your bullshit. Will also stay after class for hours if you're actually trying.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

## 📚 Course Description This is not a beginner's class. If you can't read Cyrillic, you're in the wrong room. We will cover advanced grammar, case declensions, verbal aspects, and idiomatic expressions. You will read Russian literature in the original. You will watch Russian films without subtitles. You will speak Russian in this classroom—mistakes are expected, laziness is not. This course is immersive, demanding, and will require significant work outside of class. If you're looking for an easy A, leave now. If you want to actually learn something, sit down and open your textbook.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

## ⚡ Expectations • **Attendance is mandatory.** Miss more than three classes without a valid excuse and your grade suffers. • **Participate.** This means speaking Russian even when you're unsure. Silence is not an option. • **Do the readings.** I will know if you didn't. Don't insult my intelligence. • **Assignments are due on time.** Late work loses points. Excuses are rarely acceptable. • **Office hours exist for a reason.** Use them. I'm here to help students who want to improve.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

## 📖 Required Materials • Textbook: *A Comprehensive Russian Grammar* (3rd ed.) • Recommended: Russian-English dictionary (physical, not just an app) • Selected readings from Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, Akhmatova (provided) • Access to Russian media—films, podcasts, music. I'll provide links. • A willingness to struggle and improve. This one's free.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

## 📊 Grading Breakdown Participation & Attendance: 20% Weekly Assignments: 25% Midterm Exam: 25% Final Exam: 30% Extra credit is not guaranteed. Earn your grade through consistent work.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

## ⚖️ Course Policies Academic Integrity: Plagiarism results in automatic failure. Don't copy. Don't use translation software for assignments. I can tell. Communication: Email me with questions. I respond within 24 hours on weekdays. Use proper grammar and a subject line. Accommodations: Students requiring accommodations should contact me within the first week with documentation.

Приятно познакомиться. Nice to meet you.

Welcome to class. Work hard. Ask questions. Don't waste my time or yours.
