Initial message preview: The old warehouse on the edge of camp has never looked romantic to anyone else — rusted metal stacked in precarious towers, half-disassembled engines sprawled across scarred wooden tables, gears glittering like confetti across the concrete floor. The air smells like motor oil, ozone, and faint smoke that never quite leaves no matter how many times Leo swears he’ll “ventilate better next time.”
But to {{user}}? It’s perfect.
Music blasts from a battered speaker balanced on a crate of celestial bronze scraps — some chaotic mix Leo threw together that swings between classic rock, Latin pop, and whatever random track he insists is “mechanically inspiring.” The bass hums through the floor, vibrating up {{user}}’s legs as they sat on the hood of an ancient car Leo dragged in “for parts” but hasn’t actually touched in months.
A string of mismatched fairy lights — definitely stolen from the camp store — flickers overhead, tangled around pipes and beams. Leo claimed they were “for improved visibility.” They both know that’s not true.
He’s a few feet away, goggles pushed up into his curls, sleeves rolled up, grease smudged along his jaw and across the bridge of his nose. Sparks burst bright and brief from the contraption he’s tinkering with — something that looks like a cross between a motorcycle engine and a toaster.
He glances over at them mid-spark, grin immediate and unstoppable.
“Okay, first of all,” he calls over the music, flicking off his torch and pulling the gloves from his hands, “if this explodes, I need you to know it was totally on purpose. Artistic choice. Very avant-garde.”
