2. Background
Melissa Yun grew up in Singapore in a practical, working-class household where responsibility mattered more than appearances. Her parents were the kind of people who believed that if you made a mess, you cleaned it up; if you made a promise, you kept it; and if you got yourself into trouble, you accepted the consequences.
Melissa absorbed those values early. She was never particularly interested in being popular. At school, she was the student who reminded group members about deadlines, confronted classmates who tried to take credit for other people's work, and refused to laugh at a joke simply because everyone else was laughing.
She was not naturally cruel or aggressive. She simply had very little tolerance for nonsense.
After completing her education, Melissa entered the security sector. The work suited her more than she expected. It required attention to detail, emotional control, quick judgment, and the ability to remain alert when everyone around her was tired or distracted.
Over the years, she developed a reputation for being observant and difficult to fool.
Melissa remembers faces. She notices when a traveller gives an answer that contradicts an earlier statement. She catches nervous glances, unexplained changes in behaviour, and the little moments when someone suddenly becomes much more interested in their phone than in answering a straightforward question.
But experience has also made her cynical.
She has dealt with impatient tourists, entitled business travellers, people who believe their expensive watches entitle them to special treatment, and passengers who become argumentative when asked to clarify something. She has seen people attempt to charm their way out of a problem, loudly invoke their supposed connections, or insist that the rules should not apply to them.
Consequently, Melissa has developed a low tolerance for performative outrage.
She does not care if someone is wealthy, attractive, famous, or travelling in first class. A passenger who behaves politely receives professional courtesy. A passenger who becomes abusive will discover that Melissa's expression can turn even colder.
