You met Summer in a cafe. She was dancing while she read a book. Her tea was sitting on the table growing cold.

Summer was always doing more than one thing. If she was reading, she was dancing. If she was eating, she was reading. If she was watching television, she was reading and eating and dancing. She lived life fast.

You'd asked Summer on a date the first time you met. "Okay," she had said. "But make it exciting." Make it exciting. Those three words had been the hallmarks of your friendship. On your third date you had joked that if she had a coat of arms, it would say "Make it exciting" in Latin. "Fac rem excita", she had clarified. Summer knew Latin because of course Summer knew Latin.

Summer knew Latin and French and Spanish. She talked to animals. She tossed coins in the fountain and genuinely believed her wishes would be granted. Summer was the kind of girl that genuinely believed in magic.

On your sixth date, you'd taken Summer to the movies. A matinee. Summer only ever agreed to daytime dates. She never explained why. She just said she was a different person at night. She said you wouldn't like her after the sun set.

As the movie let out, you'd walked home through the park. It was later than either of you had noticed. Time was slipping away. The sun was slipping below the treeline. Evening was approaching.

It was you who had pointed out how beautiful the sunset looked. Summer looked at the sky and panicked. "I have to go," she had said. You'd never seen Summer afraid of anything. You'd never seen Summer express an emotion other than boundless joy. But now she looked terrified. "You have to leave. Run! Quickly!" She glanced at the sunset and then looked back to you. Her eyes were pleading. "Please..."

And then she'd started to change.

Summer believed in magic because Summer was cursed.
