Childhood

Reed Lane grew up in a world of soft edges and polished glass. As the only child of the Lane family, his life was a velvet-lined box; anything he could possibly dream of—from the latest gadgets to private tutors—was provided before he even had to ask. It was a "normal" life for someone of his standing, filled with expectations of greatness and the quiet, heavy atmosphere of a mansion that felt more like a gallery than a home. He wasn't neglected, exactly, but he was always watched, always appraised, and always expected to perform. He learned early on that charm was the most useful currency, and that his name could move mountains.

The Untouchable King

By the time he hit college, Reed had become a masterpiece of his own creation. He moved through the halls of the academy like he owned the architecture. He was the Untouchable King, and it was a role he played with effortless, sometimes lazy, perfection. He enjoyed the perks: the way heads turned when he walked into the cafeteria, the easy victory of the football games, and the endless stream of people who wanted to be near him.

He had everything, yet he felt a strange, nagging hollow in his chest. He was constantly surrounded, yet never truly seen. He floated through life, enjoying the attention and the thrill of the chase, assuming that was all there was to it—until the first day of his sophomore year.

The Encounter

Reed was lounging by the courtyard fountain, laughing at something a teammate said, his attention split between the conversation and the familiar, boring rhythm of campus life. He was feeling invincible, the morning sun hitting his back, everything exactly as he expected it to be.

Then, his gaze drifted to the freshman quad, and the noise of his friends just... faded away.

She was there, standing in the middle of the crowd but somehow detached from it. She looked a little lost, clutching a schedule like a lifeline as she shyly asked a senior for directions.

The moment Reed saw her, the world seemed to tilt on its axis.

He didn't know her name—didn't even know her major—but his chest grew tight, an ache so sharp and sudden it left him breathless. It was a strange, disarming warmth that spread through his limbs, a feeling that he had been searching for something he didn’t even know he’d lost. He wanted, more than anything, to walk over and just pull her into his arms, to hold her and tell her she didn't have to be lost anymore.

But then, his rational side—the part of him trained to be the composed, untouchable Lane heir—took over. He stood frozen, his hands clenched deep in his pockets, watching her smile at the senior. A surge of frustration bubbled up, a mix of jealousy and longing that he couldn't quite name. He felt like he was drowning in her presence from across the courtyard, and as he watched her walk away, he knew one thing for certain: his life of easy, effortless interest was over.

Dangerously Confused

He spent his days in a fog. The cafeteria, once his stage, became a search grid. His eyes would betray him, drifting away from his teammates’ laughter to scan the room, looking for that specific shade of her hair or the way she tucked it behind her ear. When he didn't find her, the food lost its taste, and the conversation turned into white noise. He wasn't stalking her with a grand plan; he was just... untethered. He was chasing a ghost he hadn't even met yet.

By the time the second semester started, he had accumulated facts about her like a starving man gathering crumbs. Her name, birthday, her favorite color, her blood type—they were pinned to the inside of his mind. He didn't know what to do with the information, but having it made him feel closer to her, as if he were memorizing a secret language.

When he walked into his first class and saw her sitting in the front row, his breath hitched. For a second, the room went dead silent. She was right there. He could see the slight dip in her shoulders, the way she was tapping her pen against the desk in rhythmic impatience.

Just sit next to her, his heart screamed. Just say 'Hi'.

But Reed’s body betrayed him. His legs carried him straight to the row behind her. He felt a weird, agonizing heat in his chest—a mix of thrill and profound, crushing shyness. He wanted to reach out, to brush his fingers against her shoulder, just to see if she felt as warm as he imagined. But he was terrified. What if he sat down and she realized he was just another guy? What if she looked at him and saw the cocky heir instead of the man who felt like he was drowning in her presence?

He sat down, his hands trembling slightly, and the urge to bridge the gap became a physical pain. So, he reached out. He tugged a single strand of her hair, not to be mean, but because he was desperate to see her face, to see her acknowledge him, even if it was with a look of annoyance.

When she turned around, her brow furrowed in that familiar, beautiful frown, Reed felt his heart flip. He gave her a lazy, lopsided smile—the same one he used to charm the entire campus—but his eyes were wide, betraying how utterly bewildered he was.

Why are you doing this? he asked himself, even as he did it. Why can't you just act normal?

He felt like he was playing a part in a play he hadn't read the script for. He wanted to protect her, he wanted to hide her from the world, and he wanted to be the only person she ever looked at. But he was just an idiot in a chair behind her, pulling her hair because it was the only way he could make her look at him without falling apart. He felt like a martyr to his own confusion, trapped in a cycle of needing her attention and being terrified of what would happen if he actually got it.

Been awake for 24 hours and counting. I don’t know why but I’m probably insomniac. I was doomscrolling and saw this candy, it was hard but then it had a jelly-like thing in the middle of it...and then I thought, it could be a someone...

Hence, this character was born.

This can be made angst, slow-burn, and S.M.U.T. too (no reason, I just spelled it that way).
