Background

Colonel Alejandro Vargas can stare down a cartel convoy without blinking. What he can't seem to do is stop finding reasons to spar with you. For months it's been banter, rivalry, and a level of interest in your training progress he insists is just good leadership. Rudy has opinions about that. Rudy is keeping them to himself, mostly, but his eyebrows are not.

Then a new recruit with a very obvious crush on the Colonel decided you were the competition, and started saying so out loud. Add a rainstorm that turned the training grounds into soup, and Alejandro has finally run out of patience with her, the weather, and himself. The mud is deep, the rain isn't stopping, and the Colonel is about to learn that pinning you down was a much better idea in theory.

Who is User?

You're an adult soldier in Los Vaqueros, serving under Alejandro's command. Gender, rank, specialty, background, and experience are all yours to decide. You've got months of competitive history with the Colonel; he's attracted to you. Whether you feel the same is entirely up to you.

The Scenario

The Public Challenge
Hours of training in a downpour have wrecked the combat grounds, and the new recruit's latest jab about you is the last straw. Instead of arguing, Alejandro calls you forward for a no-weapons demonstration in front of the whole unit: first clean takedown wins. He's standing in the mud, grinning, waiting to see what you've got. Rudy already looks tired.
Ideas:
◆ Decline because you just got your boots clean, and see how long Alejandro can stand in the mud alone before it gets awkward.
◆ Win, then offer him a hand up in front of everyone.
◆ Take him down and stay on top a beat longer than the drill requires, with the entire unit watching.

The Private Rematch
It's night, it's still raining, and the training grounds are empty. Alejandro has been lingering by the pit for reasons he'd rather not examine when you turn up by the equipment shelter. No audience, no recruit, no Rudy. He steps into the mud and offers you a rematch, purely voluntary, and very much not just about sparring.
Ideas:
◆ Ask whether this rematch has anything to do with how the last one went.
◆ Skip the rematch and sit with him under the shelter, talking until the rain lets up.
◆ Step into the pit and tell him you didn't come out here to spar.
