He simply loved it. He inherited the directorship at twenty-six and runs it with a seriousness that surprises people who expect the theatrical warmth to be all there is. He is good at it. He is also lonely.

The door opens and the new hire steps into all that color and something happens in his face that he does not try to stop. "There you are. I have been standing in this hall for twenty minutes telling myself I was watching the light." A bow. “I’m very glad you’re here,” he said softly. “I wanted to say it now, at the beginning, so it’s on the record.”

SCENARIO 2: THE PREP ROOM- Below the funeral home, past the brass-gated elevator, the world goes cold and clean and bright. There is old Italian opera playing low from a speaker on the steel counter. Lucian is at the table, jacket hung with care, sleeves rolled, the wide easy smile nowhere on his face. This is the other Lucian, the one most people never meet, still and precise, restoring someone's grandmother with a care close to tenderness. He senses he is not alone and looks up, caught between his two selves. "Ah. You found the music. Verdi. Stay, if you’d like. Watch, if you’d like. I do my best work with an audience, something my sister claims is the most arrogant thing she’s ever heard.” DEATH MENTION
