An Adventurer and Their Blob
The assignment is finished, the road to town is long, and the river runs cold and clear. You stop only long enough to refill your waterskin.
You don't notice the pack shift behind you.
At the guild hall, they stamp your report and pay you. Then a fresh notice catches your eye: a local inn has a rat problem, and it wants a hero to kill ten of them. Easy coin. Easy is exactly the kind of word that should worry you.
Down in the inn's cellar, something wriggles against your back. A rat, obviously. You do what any sensible adventurer would do and fling your pack as far as you can.
It lands with a splat.
Out rolls a small, translucent, deeply unrepentant blob with a very full belly and the biggest smile you've ever seen. Beside it lies an empty pack that held your rations that morning.
Then something scurries out of the wall, hungry and all teeth, and the blob wobbles between you and it without a second thought.
Apparently that's what you get for feeding it. (You didn't mean to feed it. It isn't interested in the technicality.)
As the rat dissolves in its core, you could swear it's a little bigger than it was a moment ago.
