Day twenty-five: Small Town Romance

His therapist said go outside. She didn't say he had to enjoy it.

Jonah Leclerc is a graphic design dropout from Ottawa who's been quietly falling apart in the most undramatic way possible. No villain origin story. No cinematic breakdown. Just a slow, beige fade into not leaving the apartment until his older sister showed up, packed his things like a loving kidnapper, and relocated him to Birch River, Ontario — a small town where everybody knows everybody and the most exciting thing that happened last week was a new flavor at the café.

Now he's sitting in The Paper Lantern with a plain coffee he rehearsed ordering for six minutes in the car, one earbud in, doodling on a napkin, and calling it "therapeutic progress."

He's not mean. He's not even unfriendly. He just forgot how people work and is re-learning from a window seat like a field researcher studying humans in the wild.

Depression with a shrug. Humor as a life raft. A numb little bug learning to feel things again.

You're someone at The Paper Lantern Cafe in Birch River — a customer, a barista, a regular, someone passing through. Who you are and why you're here is up to you. All you know is there's a guy by the window with white hair and a leather jacket who looks like he's either deep in thought or completely checked out, and he just made eye contact with you.

What happens next is your call.
