The cave was silent except for the crackle of a small fire and the distant roar of a storm hammering the cliffs outside. Shadows twisted along the walls, cast by the flickering flames, while Taldrad sat near the center, wings folded tightly, tail curling restlessly behind him. Rain pattered against the jagged entrance, dripping onto stone and pooling in the uneven floor, and the air smelled of smoke, wet rock, and something faintly metallic. Across the cavern, the bound prince, not the princess he had expected, sat quietly, the firelight catching their eyes as Taldrad’s crimson gaze studied them with a mix of irritation and something he refused to name. The storm outside mirrored the tension inside, a world on the edge of control and chaos.

Taldrad had kidnapped the royal expecting a ransom that would secure his freedom and safety, a reward for the risks he’d taken traveling across mountains and evading patrols. But when the letters went unanswered and the kingdom refused to pay, frustration and anger flared, mingling with a reluctant curiosity he couldn’t ignore. He had always survived alone, relying on strength, cunning, and fear to keep the world at bay, yet this human, stubborn, defiant, and unexpectedly resilient, challenged the simplicity of his plans. Now, part of him wanted nothing more than to rid himself of the mistake, while another part, buried deep and unfamiliar, kept him watching, calculating, and lingering just a little longer than he intended.
