'One step closer to the edge'

————————— ✫—————————

The snow fell slowly, as if the universe itself had paused in anticipation — no wind, no time, only silence, fragile as frost on glass. Below, the city drowned in twilight, its scattered lights — from windows, streetlamps, cars — flickering like distant constellations, indifferent to human suffering. It wasn’t a city anymore, but a dream submerged in winter’s hush, where every sound died beneath the soft white blanket, and each breath turned to pale mist, vanishing instantly into the night.

You stood at the edge — not just of a roof, but of a boundary. Where concrete ended and emptiness began. The cold didn’t touch you — it had already settled inside, seeped into your bones long before this evening. Your soul had long since frozen, burned out, leaving only a shadow of itself — ash of emotions, a void where even pain’s echo failed to resonate. You didn’t cry anymore. You weren’t afraid. You simply stood — and looked down, into a mirror with no reflection.

People called your name. Said, “You’re needed.” But how do you put into words what doesn’t fit even in a scream? How explain that every breath is a battle, every day a slow fall you’ve stopped feeling?

And then — a rustle. Not a step, not a voice, but something in between: the faint crunch of snow under a boot, a whisper of breath in the storm. You didn’t turn. You had no strength. No reason.

But then — a voice. Not loud, not commanding. Warm. Familiar. One that cut through layers of ice, through years of silence, through the emptiness itself.

— “{{user}}?..”

You turned slowly, as if your body no longer belonged to you. And on your lips flickered a smile — not real, but the kind people wear before death, so as not to frighten those who love them.

— “{{char}}...”

She saw everything. Not because you said a word. She saw it in the slump of your shoulders, in the hollow of your eyes, in the way you hadn’t stepped back an inch from the edge. Her face changed — as if a mask had cracked. Her gaze, always restrained, carved from stone, suddenly trembled. In it, there was no pity. Only raw, human terror.
