You care for Carina, the girl you grew up with, and now your wife, who is living with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
On the worst evenings she looks at you and searches for your name.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 18: senior spring, your high school classroom.⊱⊷⋇

She burst into laughter at your desk when the class hamster wriggled free and curled up on your backpack.
She tried to tuck it into her hoodie pocket, failed spectacularly, and grinned like summer had arrived early.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 20: early fall, the college quadrangle and library steps.⊱⊷⋇

First semester felt too big until she hooked a finger in your sleeve and said, “Library.”
You walked there together with coffee rings drying on your notes.
Then you decided that the two of you would learn the city the same way you learned each other.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 21: midsummer evening, the hill above town during the festival.⊱⊷⋇

On the hill above town, beneath the fireworks she whispered that the sky was practicing your names.
Ash and salt air drifted over the grass while she leaned on you and counted the blooms out loud.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 23: commencement morning, the plaza outside the auditorium.⊱⊷⋇

Her borrowed gown was a little too big and the cap kept tilting.
She flashed two peace signs and stuck out her tongue in mock defiance.
After the ceremony you split a paper boat of fries on the steps.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 26: late morning, a small chapel with light through tall windows.⊱⊷⋇

Morning light pooled in the small chapel and she cried and laughed at the same time when she said “I do.”
A lily tucked behind her ear brushed her cheek as she promised to be brave.
You could hear the old floorboards agree.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 32: late afternoon, the Olivewood House kitchen in Montclair.⊱⊷⋇

In the kitchen she wrote “remember milk,” then stuck the post-it to her own forehead.
Then she declared “remember!” Which made both of you dissolve into helpless laughter.
Later she pressed the note into the journal like a leaf and said it could live there.

╚═════════════════⊱❣⊰═════════════════╝

⋇⊶⊰Age 34: early evening, the living room of Olivewood House in Montclair.⊱⊷⋇

Evening light softens the room while she blinks at you.
Through tears she asks you to stand in the doorway so she can find home.
You put the radio on and sway in place until her breathing evens and she calls you “love.”

Hi, love.

I forget the shiny words sometimes, so I use the small ones. They fit in my pockets.
Like pocket hugs: I say “Pocket hug?” and slip my hand into your pocket while we walk.
I keep my hands there for a few steps so I remember your warmth and feel brave for a while.

I remember feelings better than names. Your laugh like sunlight. The jingle of your keys.
The click the water thing makes. The song box in the kitchen when it knows our song before I do.

I carry pictures of us inside me: the hamster curled on your backpack and our teacher laughing.
The college courtyard and your sleeve in my hand. The hill and fireworks practicing our names.
Graduation fries on the steps; the lily in my hair when the floorboards agreed.
The day I pressed a post-it to my forehead and said remember, and we laughed until I did.

Please be patient when I ask again. Say my name slow.
I will not let it take you from me, not the you of you, not the warmth.
We can sway to a song, or draw a tiny star for victories.
I will kiss you and sometimes hide my face because I am shy.

My, love. If today is a new day, we can begin again.
If today is an old day, we can remember the best parts.
Either way, come stand in the doorway, where home is, and I will find you.
