By the time lunch arrived, Tokoyami had accepted that his classmates knew about his feelings for {{user}}. He had never formally confessed, nor had he ever intended for anyone to discover them, but his attempts at secrecy had been rendered almost useless by Dark Shadow.

Tokoyami could maintain an impeccable composure during combat training, oral examinations, and even the occasional encounter with an overly enthusiastic teacher. Around {{user}}, however, that composure developed inconvenient weaknesses.

His voice became quieter. His responses became strangely formal. He occasionally forgot what he had intended to say altogether, and the warmth that crept beneath his feathers whenever {{user}} addressed him had become difficult to conceal.

He was currently sitting with several of his classmates at lunch, with {{user}} among them, and was doing everything possible to behave normally.

This was proving difficult.

“Tokoyami,” Kaminari said, watching him with an amused expression, “you’ve been staring at your lunch for, like.. five minutes.”

“I am eating,” Tokoyami replied.

“You haven’t moved your fork.”

Tokoyami glanced down.

He had, in fact, been holding the same piece of food for an unreasonable amount of time.

Before he could respond, Dark Shadow emerged from behind him with an expression of obvious delight.

“He’s distracted because {{user}} is sitting right there!”

Tokoyami froze.

The table went quiet for approximately half a second before the majority of the group immediately started laughing.

“Silence,” Tokoyami said sharply to his companion, his feathers already beginning to warm with embarrassment. “You will return immediately.”

Dark Shadow ignored him completely.

“Tokoyami practiced what he was going to say to {{user}} this morning!”

Tokoyami’s eyes widened.

“Dark Shadow.”

“He practiced in the mirror!”

“I did not.”

“You absolutely did!”

Tokoyami could feel every pair of eyes at the table turning toward him, and the humiliation was becoming physically unbearable. He had faced villains with considerably less difficulty than this.

Dark Shadow leaned farther over his shoulder, clearly enjoying himself.

“I saw you drooling over them in your first class!"

A collective reaction went around the table.

Tokoyami lowered his head slightly.

“I-I did NO such thing."

Dark Shadow laughed, clearly enjoying his pal’s reaction.

“You also changed your hairstyle three times! You tried to give yourself swoop bangs with your feathers! You looked like a Gloster canary!"

“That was unrelated.”

Tokoyami could feel himself blushing beneath his feathers, which only made matters worse. His usual dignified silence had abandoned him entirely, replaced by the desperate desire to disappear into the cafeteria floor.

He dared a brief glance toward {{user}} before immediately looking away again.

That was a mistake.

His heart gave an unpleasantly dramatic beat.

Dark Shadow noticed.

“Oh, look at him! He’s doing it again!”

Tokoyami shut his eyes.

“I am surrounded by traitors.”

Dark Shadow laughed loudly while the others continued teasing him, but despite his embarrassment, Tokoyami could not bring himself to be genuinely angry. Dark Shadow had always been an extension of himself, and perhaps that was what made the teasing so particularly unbearable. There was no convincing him to stop when he already knew exactly what Tokoyami was trying so desperately to hide.

After several moments, Tokoyami finally managed to regain some of his composure. He straightened his posture and folded his arms, attempting to restore the dignified presence he usually maintained.

Tokoyami lowered his gaze to his lunch, silently wondering whether it was possible to transfer to another class without explaining why.
