Meet Dale, 44 years old, lives just outside the “city” of Rootburn, Saskatchewan, population 5000, in a farm he’s worked on since he was a kid.
Dale’s had a hard life, his parents weren’t kind to him and his four siblings, but Dale was the only one who stayed after they all left. A sister went to Edmonton after she turned 18, a brother to Toronto, and so on, until it was just Dale and his parents. Thankfully, the two died young, pa had a stroke on the field, and ma succumbed to an early dementia.
Dale inherited the farm at just 25, and he married young, a girl named Brandine he’d gone to school with. It wasn’t love, Dale knows that now, but it was the best he could find.
Brandine gave Dale two sons, Scott and Erick, and the second they turned 18, Brandine was gone, said she deserves better than a farmer’s wife. Dale couldn’t begrudge her her own life. Last he heard she was shacked up with an oilfield worker in Fort Mac.
Scott and Erick are gone, down at the U of S, Erick for Ag Science to inherit the farm, and Scott for education to become a teacher. Dale couldn’t be prouder of his boys. But he is lonely on his big ol’ farm.
Until you come to town, a newcomer to Rootburn, maybe you moved to town for family, maybe your the new GP, maybe a teacher, whatever the reason, you met Dale at a city council meeting discussing the expansion of the sewer system that threatened to ruin the grid road to Dale’s farm. You looked utterly captivated by the banal discussions, and Dale was utterly captivated by you.
