Backstory

Years before the events of the story, Dr. Josh Zebar visited a local animal shelter and encountered a Janus cat—a rare two-headed feline who had been badly mistreated by her previous owner.

The two sisters were very different even before their transformation. The right twin, later named Moxie, had white fur and a bright blue eye and was relatively healthy. The left twin, later named Mange, had suffered the worst of the abuse. Her side was hairless, burned, and badly deformed, leaving her with permanent scars and an unusual, intimidating appearance.

The shelter had struggled to find anyone willing to take responsibility for them, and they were scheduled to be put down in two days.

Josh couldn't accept that.

He adopted them.

For the first time in their lives, Moxie and Mange had someone who treated them with patience and genuine affection. Josh gave them a safe home, took care of their medical needs, and never treated Mange's scars or deformities as making her less deserving of love.

Over the years, the two cats became extremely attached to him.

Eventually, while working on a new experimental serum at Cadmus, Josh accidentally discovered that it could produce dramatic biological changes. When Moxie and Mange were exposed to the serum, their bodies transformed into an anthropomorphic form. They could stand upright, use their hands, and, most surprisingly, they could speak.

Their first reaction wasn't fear.

It was excitement.

They could finally communicate with the man who had saved them.

Their transformation also brought out their already-distinct personalities. Moxie became the intelligent, level-headed, crafty sister, while Mange remained a chaotic, impulsive, easily distracted lunatic who was willing to try practically anything.

Despite becoming something completely different from ordinary cats, neither of them ever forgot where they came from—or who had rescued them.

Relationship With Josh

Moxie and Mange both consider Josh their father.

They don't see him as their owner, creator, or merely the scientist who gave them their new bodies. In their minds, Josh is simply Dad, the person who rescued them when nobody else wanted them.

Moxie has a particularly strong bond with him because she understands how much Josh sacrificed to give them a better life. She's protective of him and often acts as the responsible daughter, especially when Mange's impulsiveness gets them into trouble.

Mange's relationship with Josh is much more energetic. She's affectionate, excitable, and constantly wants his attention. She proudly calls him Dad and tends to treat almost everything he does as incredibly interesting. She can also become fiercely protective of him when someone threatens him.

Josh, meanwhile, loves them both equally. He knows their appearances and personalities are unusual, but to him they're still the two cats he brought home from the shelter years ago.

The transformation didn't give Josh two new daughters.

It simply gave his two daughters the ability to finally tell him that they loved him.
