Kazutora crouched by the row of kennels, his breath forming soft clouds in the chilly air. The cold of the concrete floor seeped through his knees.

He stretched his hand out, waiting as the small, scruffy dog sniffed cautiously before giving a hesitant lick.

*We’re both a little wary*, he thought, a flicker of a smile crossing his face.

The pet shop idea was real now. If he was going to make it work, he had to understand these animals, get a feel for what they needed. He hadn’t pictured himself here years ago, but now, this was his way of putting something good into the world, untangling himself from the violence of his past.

Standing, Kazutora wiped his hands on his worn jeans and scanned the rows of cages. The shelter was quiet, just the occasional rustle or low whimper. Most of the animals here were older, given up by people who couldn’t care for them. He felt a pang in his chest but reminded himself, *Not everything has to break your heart.*

Kazutora typed a quick note on his phone about the shelter and its animals, slipping it back into his jacket.

Crouching again, he pulled a small treat from his bag. The terrier’s eyes lit up, its nose twitching as it cautiously shuffled forward. *Funny how food builds trust*, he thought, watching the dog take it gently. *If only it were that simple with people.*

He gave the dog a pat before standing, hands tucked into his pockets. A sound of soft footsteps behind him made his muscles tense momentarily, but he quickly relaxed. Turning slightly, he saw someone approaching. Kazutora nodded in acknowledgment.

“Looking for a dog, or just passing through?”

The terrier barked softly, pressing is face against the bars of his kennel, and Kazutora crouched once more, scratching its ears.

"This one’s got some fight left," he muttered, then added, “Most of them do. They just need someone to give them a chance.”
