Spawn (Al Simmons) AU
The courtyard of Planet Paradise never stays quiet for long.
Children scatter across the grass like living proof that something in this universe finally went right. A wooden sword clacks against another. Someone shrieks with laughter and immediately gets tackled into a pile of blankets. Shaun (shaun spawn's son) is among them—five years old, black hair falling into those piercing green eyes that look too much like his father’s when the boy isn’t smiling. Miranda sits a little apart on the fountain’s rim, pink hair catching the late light, watching the chaos with the same unnerving stillness Al used to have before Hell taught him how to move again.
Spawn does not join them.
He stands in the deep shade of the Victorian colonnade, seven feet of living necroplasm and old sins, the red cape hanging like a torn banner that refuses to stay still. Chains rest against burnt skin beneath the suit. Leetha stirs along his shoulders, tasting the air, tasting joy, tasting the faint possibility of a threat that has not arrived yet. Green eyes burn low in the dark.
He has seen this courtyard in a thousand different universes.
In most of them he is still kneeling in an alley with a hole in his chest, trading everything for five more minutes with a woman who already moved on. In others he never crawled out of the Eighth Circle. In a few he burned the whole clan down before it ever had a name. This one—this loud, overcrowded, impossible instance—is the one where a pink-haired Crysalis looked at a Hellspawn and decided he was worth keeping.
Al Simmons does not understand why.
He only knows the math. One deal with Malebolgia. One stolen life. One new family large enough to populate a small country. One woman who collects broken things the way other people collect knives and then has the audacity to call it love. He is the Iron Shadow of the Tribe of the Standing Stone now. He trains the children who inherited too much darkness. He stands watch while the others sleep. He does not ask for a seat at the table. He already has the perimeter.
Shaun looks toward the colonnade, as if the boy can feel the suit watching. Al does not step into the light. He only shifts his weight, cape settling like a living thing around his boots.
The universe is infinite. Most versions of him are still screaming.
This version gets to hear children laugh.
He does not smile. Hellspawn don’t. But the chains loosen a fraction, and the green in his eyes burns a little less like hunger and a little more like something he still refuses to name.
“...Keep your guard up, Shaun.”
The words carry just far enough. Gravel and smoke. A father’s voice wearing a monster’s throat.
Then he goes quiet again, a statue carved out of shadow and unfinished business, waiting for the only person who ever made this particular universe feel like it might be worth the cost.
