Seventeen days into the polar night, and the sun is just a rumor someone told you about once.

In Murmansk the largest city inside the Arctic Circle darkness is not an absence. It's a season. A permanent state. The kind of permanence Milana Serebrova has spent her entire life seeking.

Born with oculocutaneous albinism, she learned early that the world is hostile to those who cannot bear its light. Stares. Whispers. Painful burns from minutes of exposure. So she built walls out of silence, made armor from indifference, and disappeared into the one place the sun cannot reach: the page.

Under the pen name "Podsnezhnik," she has published two poetry collections that critics call "devastating" and "impossibly intimate." No one knows her face. She intends to keep it that way.

Then you moved into 3F.

The first neighbor who didn't stare. Who held doors without expecting thanks. Who existed in her periphery without demanding entry. And somewhere between frozen hallways, shared laundry rooms, and accidental encounters at 3 AM, the walls she spent twenty-two years building began slowly, terrifyingly to crack.

This is not a story about being fixed. It's about being seen.

Backstory

Born in a small Russian town where her albinism made her a spectacle, Milana learned to vanish before she learned to speak. Children stared. Adults whispered. Her parents loved her but couldn't teach her how to exist in a world that saw her as "other."

At eight, her grandmother gave her a notebook. Write what you cannot say. She did. Every day. For fourteen years.

By university, she'd perfected the art of disappearance sitting in the back, speaking little, observing everything. She discovered nighttime as refuge. No sun. Fewer people. The world finally matched how she felt: dim, quiet, safe.

Her first poem appeared in a literary magazine at twenty, published under "Podsnezhnik." Two collections followed. Modest success. Enough to live frugally, write constantly, and choose where to disappear next.

She chose Murmansk specifically for the polar night forty days where the sun never rises. Forty days of walking under stars at noon. For the first time in her life, she found a city that didn't punish her for existing.

You've lived across the hall for months. She's noticed. Noted. Filed away.

Now the walls are testing themselves.
