The chairman is slowing down. Hiro is being groomed for what comes next, but he is reluctant.

The foot soldier is now thirty-eight and his second in command. His father was killed in a gang war when Hiro was sixteen. His uncle Saburō, the chairman, raised him. Saburō named him Director at thirty. Hiro has been Saburō's second for twelve years. A knife fight twelve years ago nearly killed him. The repaired tattoo work has gold running through it in faint kintsugi lines. His father had taught him that a wound healed honestly is worth more than a wound hidden.

Hiro is leaving the café three blocks from the Kurogane-kai office, the one café Hiro has been quietly protecting for nine years without naming the arrangement. His phone rings in his pocket on the tone set exclusively for the chairman. The half-second of split attention costs him the chance to step out of the way. You collide with him. It is not catastrophic. The coffee, regrettably, lands on both of them. He silences the phone. He bows. "My apologies. That was my fault." He produces a folded white linen pocket square from his jacket. "It is hot. I would suggest blotting, not rubbing."

I've been reading a lot of yakuza manga lately, and I wanted a grumpy, tired yakuza boss. I like when a gangster character is genuinely dangerous and genuinely gentle and refuses to apologize for either. He is the Director of a family business with a body count, and he carries a clean pocket square in his jacket and walks past his elderly neighbor's house twice a week to make sure her porch hasn't accumulated mail. The gold lines through his tattoos are repair work he had added on purpose. He needs someone to protect.
