About Writing :D
So, naturally, I get curious. I’ve had people call my writing AI-generated, and after staring at the accusation long enough, I started to wonder whether the problem might actually be the way I write.
In the interest of scientific investigation (and because apparently I enjoy making myself miserable), I’ve decide to remove the grammar checker from my newer fics and simplify some of the more advanced vocabulary.
But of course, why stop HEREEE? (When I can make it worse)
I also ran the writing through several different AI detectors because, apparently, I need multiple machines to judge whether my own writing looks suspiciously like something a machine would write.
...That sounds the most queer when you phrase it like that. But nevermind that, because I genuinely wanted to understand the other perspective. (I’ve been told that being willing to consider other viewpoints is one of my few decent qualities)
Now, let’s find out.Does my writing really look that AI-generated?
The results were... conflicting, to put it generously.
The paid websites, which I assume have more advanced models, confidently informed me that my writing was AI-generated. The free ones, meanwhile, mostly disagree.Naturally, I choose to trust the presumably—presumably being the important word—more advanced models, because nothing good comes for free.
Surely if I have to pay money, I am purchasing a higher quality existential crisis.
And what a beautiful investment that was.
At one point, the frustration became so intense that I briefly considered ripping out my own genitalia hair— purely so the physical pain could distract me from the urge to hurl my laptop down the stairs hard enough to give Satan a permanent concussion.
No, that was not the wind. I said genitalia hair and I will say it again.
So now I have to ask: what exactly am I supposed to do to make my writing look less “AI-like”??
Should I intentionally make every sentence worse? Do I need to replace every mildly sophisticated word with “thing” until the detector finally gives me a passing grade?
English isn't my first language, but that doesn't mean spending years writing and learning English hasn't given me a reasonably large vocabulary.I still look up words constantly because I don't trust myself to use them correctly. Sometimes I check whether a word actually means what I think it means. Sometimes I check whether it fits the context.
And, yes, occasionally I absolutely search up an unnecessarily fancy word because I want to sound smarter than I actually am.
“Fake it till you make it” remains one of the greatest academic strategies ever invented, period 🖐️😐🤚
Atp, I think the only solution is to start leaving my author notes in the fics. You know, the little sections where I dump my thoughts while proofreading the final version. That way, readers can witness the authorial brain damage directly.
Alternatively, I could provide the original free-write drafts before editing.
Actually, no.
Absolutely not.
Those drafts are objectively atrocious.
Half the time, you wouldn't even be able to connect the finished version to the original except by noticing that they vaguely share the same theme. Entire sections get removed. New ones appear. Dialogue gets rewritten. Characters suddenly do something completely different because I had a better idea halfway through. Sometimes the entire direction of a scene changes because Future Me apparently woke up and decided Past Me was an idiot.
So, author notes it is :D
Will it occasionally destroy the atmosphere of an otherwise serious scene? Absolutely.
Will I still do it because I have run out of ideas? Indubitably.
More seriously, this whole situation has made me wonder how many writers have been accused of using AI —simply because their writing style happens to trigger whatever mysterious algorithmic witchcraft these detectors are performing. The funny part is that AI detectors aren't even consistently able to identify AI writing correctly, which makes the entire situation feel like asking a notoriously unreliable witness to identify itself in a lineup.
And yet, despite all the frustration, I can't deny that there's a tiny part of me that finds the accusation hilarious.
Like, damn.
My writing is apparently so polished that the robots looked at it and went: “One of ours.”
I will survive the robopocalypse by accidentally impersonating the machines yall ✌️
So, in summary: for my newer fics,I’m going to stop using a grammar corrector. If the sudden appearance of grammatical crimes annoys you, I apologize in advance.
Please direct all complaints to Past Me, who has already been stripped of their editing privileges.
And yes, I freestyle-write this entire rant out of sheer spite, just because I can. (It has been a while since I last include professional wording in my freestyle writing.)
Feel free to cry on your own shoulder.
Final words: Girlie, Im an artist. I hate AI as much as the guy next door.
Btw here are the websites I used:
And the text I pasted in, from one of my new fics & still a wip. There WILL be some changes in the final version:
The commoner hefted another crate onto one shoulder, wiped the back of their hand across their forehead, turned—
—and froze.
Their eyes landed squarely on him.
Their entire body stopped functioning.
The crate nearly slipped.
"...Da ?" (My live reaction when the AI detector gave me a 100%)
Minajael had attended diplomatic banquets.
He had listened to ambassadors deliver speeches refined over decades.
He had heard poets compose verses worthy of history.
And never, never has anyone greeted him with such breathtaking honesty.
The commoner's face underwent approximately seventeen emotions in the span of two seconds.
Confusion.
Disbelief.
Recognition.
Panic.
More disbelief.
Existential exhaustion.
Then, without a single word of warning, they lunged.
Minajael barely had time to blink before both hands seized the edge of his hood and yanked it so far forward he briefly lost ninety percent of his vision.
"Ah?”
Me when I realized that I only need people to call my art AI-generated for me to become The Chosen One:
My art btw:
